How to Increase Blog Traffic: Top 10 Ways That Works

increase blog traffic

Blogging isn’t a one way street; A blog can’t exist without traffic and It’s readers, can it?

I grew up with this quote.

Today I am going to share with you some really awesome working ways to get those readers and increase blog traffic that I’ve tried and worked on myself.

Before I start, let me tell you that the days of easy Google traffic are over. If you want more traffic to your blog, then the first thing you need to bear in your mind is that they are not traffic! They are humans, they are your readers who trust you.

You should respect this fact and start on building an everlasting traffic source (email list) of your own as soon as possible to wrest the control of your blog from Google, and other websites.

When you have set this thought in your mind, you are eligible to read on this post further.

This is a long post:

When I talk about website traffic, I have to go long. The reason is, I have a lot to say (Don’t worry, I seem to know when to shut up). I’m sick of the fluffy traffic tips and tricks that doesn’t work. If you want to know about the strategies that works to increase your blog or website traffic, you’ve come to the right place.

In this post, I’d like to address a few dos and don’t that If you work on will help you increase your blog traffic. This post will cover the topics like:

  1. What is traffic and why it matters?
  2. Why most blogs fail to get traffic?
  3. Best ways to increase blog traffic
  4. Bad ways to increase blog traffic
  5. And more…

Understanding what is traffic and why It matters?

Sticking to my habit and starting with the basics as usual. ;)

Before I teach you how to increase blog traffic let me tell you what is traffic and why it matters If this is something you’re hearing of first time.

Traffic refers to the number of people who visit your site in an interval of time, a month, a week or a year.

If your primary goal with your blog is to make money, than traffic is REALLY necessary.

Traffic doesn’t come in one day, even those top bloggers whom you worship today also used to get only a few pageviews per day until they met me, I told them how to increase blog traffic like I am telling it to you today, kidding.

Okay, let’s talk about it a bit more.

Why Most Blogs Fail to Get Traffic?

I think It’s important to address a couple of problems first that might be holding you back from getting more traffic to your blog.

The reasons why most bloggers are able to attract only a few people are:

Bad Content: When the comments you get, or you see on other blogs are better than the content you create

Bad Reputation: You know it when people call you a fake guy or a cheater

Bad Practices: Black Hat SEO, buying links etc. More on bad practices and bad ways to get traffic at the end of the post!

Not using social media: You and your blog need to be everywhere, on all social media websites especially on Google Plus.

Unable to create a brand: You need to convert your blog into a brand. Don’t know what a brand is? Read my bud, Greg’s branding guide here.

And there are many other reasons too why they don’t get traffic which we will discuss later in this post.

Best ways to increase blog traffic:

Here’s the list of the top 10 best ways to increase blog traffic.

1. Be a king with your content:

If you’ve been blogging for any amount of time, you have definitely been hearing the term “CONTENT IS KING”, Aren’t you?

That’s my first point, Your content needs to be the king.

In order to get huge traffic, in order attract a lot of people to your blog to read your blog, you need to write something that’s worth their time and when they visit your blog they don’t feel like they have just visited a stupid blog.

So mark my words, create wonderful content on your blog and make your readers feel that they are worth the best, so they’ll comeback to your blog and share it with their friends.

2. Think of the queen:

If there’s a king in the kingdom of blogging, there has to be a queen right?

The queen is SEO.

Yeah! Search engine optimization, I mean see what’s the use of creating that epic shit when people can’t find it when they need your creations.

You have written a wonderful piece and people can’t just find it when they are searching it on Google you are still lying on the third or fourth page. Organic traffic from Google will keep your business going and growing.

So in order to reach the first page of the search results, optimize your posts and once you are able to get on the the first page of Google with your targeted keyword, then traffic will come flowing in like water. I recommend using Keyword tool by Google and create posts with SEO friendly titles, and permalinks.

Read my SEO optimization guide to learn how to write a blog post that ranks in Google’s top 10.

3. Harness the power of social media:

Till date for most of the bloggers social media is the second largest source of their traffic above advertising referrals and direct traffic all because they were and still are active on social networking sites.

That’s what you need to do, harness the power of social media use it at its fullest.

Connecting with other bloggers in your niche on all social media websites is really important, especially on Google+. Here’s the article I’ve recently written on how to use Google Plus for blogging and business.

4. Do blog commenting:

In my early days of blogging some of my comments on other blogs in my niche were the largest source of traffic at Guide and News.

Try to be everywhere, and get your comments early at the top of the list on other blogs. Let them know you, this will have two benefits:

They will start recognizing you, and if the blog you are commenting on is a CommentLuv enabled blog then you are also getting a link back to your blog which is really better for you in terms of increasing rankings and traffic

People will only click your name If your comment is quality.

5. Start guest posting on major blogs:

Guest posting is a really popular phenomenon. If you look at it most of the blogs whether they are the top ones or a few new ones have guest posting enabled on their blogs. They allow their readers and other fellow bloggers to post on their blogs in exchange for a link.

You write an awesome post which the blog owner feels are useful or may be useful for his readers so he publishes the post by giving you the whole credit of the post and give a link to your blog, and you meet a new audience.

That link works in two ways to increase your traffic:

  1. Firstly it increases your authority among search engines and they respect your site so there are chances that it will rank higher for more keywords.
  2. The people who read your post on that blog, if they like and read it word to word then they will surely follow the link to reach your blog. Once they reach your blog they will search for more such content there and here again point number one comes into action.

6. Join forums:

Like guest posting forum posting is also beneficial to increase your blog traffic.

Online forums are great place to interact with other bloggers, and the best part is that you can find the forums related to your niche.

Forums play an important role in getting targeted traffic to your blog. The concept is simple: The more you participate and post on different discussions on the forum, the more visibility you’ll get and the more traffic you’ll get from the link you have in your signature.

7. Network with other bloggers, and make friends:

Making friends and being social is a really good not only in your real life, but in blogging too. The more people you connect with the more name you will make out of yourself.

The best strategy to grow your blog is to make as many friends as possible that are interested in what you do, and build a community around yourself.

No matter what niche you’re in, you’re definitely gonna need some friends to get you up there. I’ve aready described the importance of it more in my post on one of the best strategy to grow your blog.

8. Write case studies, long articles:

Let’s start with an experiment: Search for anything which comes into your mind on Google, and have a look at the results on the first page.

Now If you open each and every result one by one you’ll notice that no post which came on the first page was short. Nine out of ten posts ranked on the first page are really long ones with a lot of research behind them.

Search engines want to deliver quality content to their readers and they also know that short posts don’t convey any value so they prefer long posts over short ones.

That’s might be the reason that the article you are currently reading is more than 2000+ words in length ;)

9. Write controversial posts:

A blog can’t stand only with long articles. Sometimes short and controversial posts works great.

I love writing long detailed articles, but I don’t do it always. Let me tell you that the length of the post has nothing to do with how good or bad it is.

Writing short and interesting posts can also be effective to get more traffic and readers because people are curious to know about it. I often write these type of posts, check out this one and this one.

10. Host giveaways:

Giveaways are really a huge source of traffic but the only problem with them is that they work only for a short period of time. Till your giveaway is live you will receive a lot of traffic and once it ends the traffic will again come back to normal, but It can get you more exposure and new visitors.

In a giveaway you ask people to share your post this time when you host one ask them to subscribe to your email list.

This way even after the giveaway ends you will be able to bring all those people back to your blog who only came there to try their luck. I’ve hosted several giveaways here at Guide and News, and I know it works!

So what do you think? These were a few awesome techniques to increase blog traffic, but If you think I’ve missed a useful traffic strategy, just drop a comment and let me know about it. Again, start working on your own traffic stream from today!

Bad ways to increase blog traffic:

Now you know about the best ways to increase blog traffic. I’d like to end up with bad traffic strategies that you should avoid.

  1. Spin content: If you think that more articles means more traffic then you are wrong, more traffic means more probability to rank higher that’s all and one more thing you can’t rank higher if you create stupid content
  2. Black Hat SEO: Search engines are smarter than you just because you can fool your brother for some cookies doesn’t mean that you can fool the search engines too. Accept it, they are smarter than you and if you try to overdo them then sooner or later you will face the penalty.
  3. Overdoing things The traffic strategies I shared above are great, but they are good and they work only if done properly, I mean if you overdo them then they will only decrease your blog readership.
  4. Comment Spam: Over commenting will make you look like a spammer in front of search engines so don’t do it.
  5. Forum spam: There’s nothing worse than spamming on forums

Over to you:

Are you thinking of using any of the above strategies to increase your blog traffic? Have you been using any of the BAD traffic strategy before? And what else has helped you to find more traffic? Post a quick comment below and let us know.

That’s the first time I’ve heard the analogy regarding the king and queen of boosting traffic, but I definitely agree with it! :)

Good content and SEO go hand in hand – after all, it’s good content that gets shared, it’s good content that gets backlinks. And that’s what boosts your SERP rankings.

    Great post.

Having a good relationship and gaining the trust and confidence of your readers is a big move to continually increase blog traffic. It takes a lot of effort though. Consistently providing quality blogs is one way.

It was really awesome post.. its very beneficial for all blogger users and website seo.
But I want to include one more think in this.. all tha content of the post must be unique and new. if we are taking copy and past form other sits then they will not work for us. second think is we have to use unique keywords along with best keywords according to the website and they will describe your page and reflect your idea to google and many more search engines. i totally agree with u and i always try to search these kinds for articles that increase my seo knowledge.

      Hey Karthik,
Great question! Google+ is REALLY important for bloggers, not only for traffic but for everything. It’s authorship, circles, hangouts and everything plays a huge role in increasing your rankings on Google.
If you find it complicated and annoying, you should read my article on how to use Google Plus here.

    Hey Ehsan,
Want to ask you something. I have a blog which features about phones, tech and other nerdy stuff. Suppose new phone is launched. So if I write about that phone or give specification it is not content spinning. I mean specification would be same every where. We can not change it. But the representation could be different.
I can give my reviews abt the particular device.
Well you have mentioned everything and once again keep up the good work and keep posting more related content.
    Regards :) :)

      Hope to have ya back!

Try to build the traffic back on track.
I have one more question. Well I have applied for adsense and they always say
Site does not comply with Google Policies. I have concerned many bloggers and some wise peoples but guess no one knows the exact problem . Can you please help me with this . I would be really thankful to you.

Well, I’m not an Adsense guy. I guess your blog or website must be older than 6 months old in order to get a verified Adsense account. How old your blog is?
And did you read the Adsense policies and TOS?

          • July 23, 2013 at 4:00 am #

it is almost 1 year old. I have read the Adsense policies. I have not any content which violate the TOS of Google Adsense.
Still not be able to understand the actual problem

  24. July 18, 2013 at 6:27 am #

I also notice many bloggers fail to drive visitors to their blog. I encounter that they are not writing the content what people are looking for. Many bloggers collect the information from another website and write the content by using that information. I would tell you People are no more interested in reading a similar post available on many other websites. If you want to attract genuine users then you must share your own thoughts or knowledge with others. Your knowledge will make that blog post unique. Your visitors also appreciate your writing and they will share your blog url on their websites. My recommendation is starting sharing your experience on your blog.

        Hi Ehsan Ullah,

Thanks for asking, everything is moving little slowly. I am still trying to build my traffic. I just recently hosted a giveaway at my blog and it was great one. Also I just recently start building my email list, I know you are thinking which blogger will start building his email list after one year! and I know I lost a lot of email entries one the past year. However I didn’t feel as an email marketing person.

Not to worry Qasim. I also start building my email list after a year of starting my blog ;)

Good post Ehsan, Agree with your views of driving traffic to a blog.

Hope am following most of the ways to get traffic to my blog, but not the bad ways.

I need to work more for my blog as am driving quite low traffic with it.

Will follow the genuine ways which you’ve listed here, thanks for sharing it!

      Good luck.

  29. July 15, 2013 at 4:08 pm #

Hey Ehsan thanks for your awesome post, i think all strategies explained by you are milestone but i prefer the seo optimized content, because the more you have organic traffic the more chances are there to get new visitors, and the more chances are there to get handsome income.
I do quote the sentence” Search engines are smarter than you just because you can fool your brother for some cookies doesn’t mean that you can fool the search engines too. Accept it, they are smarter than you and if you try to overdo them then sooner or later you will face the penalty”
So keep your self within Google TOS and avoid to become victim.

How do you generate traffic automatically Vishan?

  31. July 15, 2013 at 10:25 am #

I never knew i was making a big mistake by spinning my contents, time to run away from that angle. Well Ehsan, you’ve said it all, I’m speechless and i don’t think i have any two cents to offer. A blog without traffic is overboard even if it has great content, traffic is the most essential ingredient and the next is actually converting those traffic into subscribers by building a massive list. Its time we bow to the Queen of contents and configure her the right way for search engine optimization. Thanks for this post again Ehsan, I’m really inspired. Off to do some guest posting to feed my blog :)

      July 15, 2013 at 6:06 pm #

You’re smashing it Gilbert! Glad to have ya back here.
Haven’t you done any guest post yet?

      • July 15, 2013 at 7:50 pm #

Nope! My blog is two weeks old, this week is going to make it three weeks and i want to have up 10 posts before submitting a guest post, i have just nine now (published my latest today). I wouldn’t want a situation where I’ll submit a guest post and there won’t be much to read if i should get a referral traffic from the blog i submitted a guest post on. What do you think Ehsan, am i doing the right thing?

        • Ehsan Ullah
          July 15, 2013 at 8:25 pm #

You’re doing great Gilbert. Read my conversation with aMaan below. You just have to make sure that your blog is able to make the new visitors feel home when they arrive. Just let them know about your goals, and their expectations.

  32. July 14, 2013 at 10:50 pm #

Ehsan, you hit the nail on the head with this one! I still say blog commenting and guest posting are two surefire ways to get regular, meaningful traffic to your blog or website. And of course, high quality content that brings value to your readers is a must. I also think following a regular posting schedule is important. It doesn’t have to be every day, but just regular so your readers know when to expect something new.

    • Ehsan Ullah
      July 15, 2013 at 6:02 pm #

Hey Tom, good to have ya back here.
Yep, those two are great traffic strategy. I don’t like having a fixed posting schedule, I only publish post when I have something that adds value in reader’s life.
      Thanks for dropping in Tom.

  33. July 14, 2013 at 10:28 pm #

    Hey Ehsan,

Another great post chalked full of fabulous tips.

So I agree with the majority of them but am a little iffy on a few.

For one, Matt Cutts continues to now say that guest posting isn’t what it use to be because if you’re not some big named blogger then just writing anywhere really is not going to benefit you. I think they’ve probably just seen a lot of very low quality content from people who just accepted guest posts to build links and now that is hurting everyone who is here to do this the right way. I just get so confused about what they really want sometimes you know.

I refuse to write controversial posts just to get traffic because most of the time it’s not targeted and they don’t stick around. The same thing with giveaways. Those people just want something for free and then they’re gone. Great way to show the numbers of having a big list but they aren’t quality and they’re not sticking around so for the long haul they really aren’t that great to begin with.

Thanks for these tips though and for taking the time once again to write a really great post.

      July 15, 2013 at 5:58 pm #

You’re exactly right Adrienne, but guest posting is still the most effective linkbuilding/traffic strategy If done right. I’ve also seen some bloggers accepting paid posts, they’re accepting low quality content from people for a few dollars.
I think by just being aware of the fact that some people are doing wrong things with guest posting, we shouldn’t stop doing it. There’s still a lot of ways guest blogging can help us bloggers.
You’re again right, I’ve hosted several giveaways here and experienced it, but we can still benefit by running giveaways because, in a giveaways we ask people to share the post on his network in order to participate, so the chance of meeting a new audience ;) And who knows our blog content or design might convince those people to stick around?
      Thanks for your comment Adrienne.

  34. July 14, 2013 at 8:37 pm #

Hi Ehsan, like your king and queen analogies too :) John makes it sound so easy but that is what it’s really about – although I would add targeted traffic – right? What good is traffic if they leave immediately? A high bounce rate would not be liked well by the Google gods. I finally joined a forum, now to get back to it! Excellent tips Ehsan.

  35. July 14, 2013 at 4:32 pm #

    Awesome post as always.

I just want to add one thing. Always try to follow the 80/20 principle.

80% of the traffic comes from 20% of the work that you did. Try to find out what works and do a lot of it.

Danny Iny found that guest posting is great to build his blog, then he went to start guest posting and landed 80 guest posts on top blogs in less than a year.

Now, he is one of the recognized experts and on the way to make 700,000$ this year.

Maybe guest posting isn’t what will work with you, just try to find what works and then do a lot of it.

Another way to get traffic is to market your blog using content in different formats like podcasts, video and slideshare presentations.

    • Ehsan Ullah
      July 14, 2013 at 8:47 pm #

      Hey Ahmed,
OMG, great to see ya here. I’ve already started following that principle after publishing your guest post here.
Well said, finding what works and doing a lot of it will definitely help.
Video tutorials and slideshare presentations are what I’m going to start working on soon.
Thanks for the awesome comment Ahmed, keep on commenting back.

    Hi Ehsan

I don’t anything is left to say in your praise, it is ofcourse a great post

I struggled with my traffic a lot in beginning but now I am starting with more and more methods to double my readership

The best and the working one according to me is Guest Posting, Even after a decade the links you get from your guest posts are dead the relationship you’ll create with the blogger will be sustained for a very long time

thanks a lot for this useful read! Cheers! :-)

    Hi Ehsan,

Yet another wonderful post by you :)

You are so-so right about the ways to increase blog traffic, and I don’t think you left out anything. Ah…don’t worry about your post length because mine too often run to nearly 3000 words at times and I have sit and edit it to shorten it’s length, but I think the longer the better as they you know you have given the complete information there, though not necessary as you mentioned too.

Thankfully, I’ve never tried any of the bad ways to increase traffic, some of which I’d not even heard so far! However, I yet have to join forums, which I haven’t due to the lack of time, nor guest posting that I’m going to start with pretty soon now. Nor have I tried any giveaways so far for which I need to do something lucrative. I guess I need to not post for a few weeks as currently posting twice weekly keeps my hands full of comments, and then get down to doing these things.

Thanks for sharing and the reminders to get started with things that I’ve yet to tap. Have a nice weekend :)

    • Ehsan Ullah
      July 14, 2013 at 5:28 pm #

Hey Harleena, excited to see ya again. Was missing your comment.
Well, I love writing long detailed posts that includes all information about a specific topic, but some people think that Ehsan don’t seem to know when to shut up in his posts, even some bloggers told me personally that they don’t like reading my long posts, do you think the same?
I think that the post length doesn’t matter, and the length has nothing to do with how good or bad the post is. The only think that matters is how interesting the post is. That’s the reason I take out everything from my posts that aren’t interesting, If I don’t than all my posts would be 5000+ words in length.

Well, there are some great forums related to your niche that you should join to hangout with other blogging elites in your niche. Yeah, don’t kill yourself. change your posting frequency to one post a week!

      • July 14, 2013 at 5:42 pm #

Ah…I was right here and headed over as soon as I saw your new post on FB :)

Oh yes…people tell me too that why do I write such long posts that they find takes them time to read through, but I don’t think I’d like to change that because of them, though I do write smaller ones at times, yet the smallest might be 1500 words at the most…lol :)

I agree, it’s never the length, but the content that should grasp the readers attention and want them to keep reading right till the end that matters.

Hmm…yes, I need to start off with those too. I used to have the posts once a week earlier, then made it to twice a week, but with the number of comments that’ve started coming now, it gets a little overwhelming at times.

Thanks once again, and have a nice weekend, whatever little is left of it :)

        • Ehsan Ullah
          July 14, 2013 at 5:58 pm #

ha ha. 1500 words post wouldn’t be a short. You know what, 1000 words post are the longest of some bloggers.
Well, my shortest post is the welcome message I guess, and It’s 600 words in length which normal.
Don’t let the comments discourage you, I know your comments are better than the actual posts I read on some blogs. :D Thanks for your comment, and you too enjoy your weekend :)

  46. July 14, 2013 at 10:06 am #

    Great post as always Ehsan,

Traffic can be compared to a fuel and our blog to a car. We can’t get far with that car if we ain’t got enough fuel.

But since we can’t use any random fuels we need to get the quality one to get the best out of it. Same thing with a blog, we need quality targeted traffic if we want to get our convesions growing up.

    Take care Ehsan ;)

Just like other posts, this is also a killer one.

I believe that controversial posts gets lots of traffic. My competitor has used this topic and he won the guest blogging competition.

I believe content with marketing strategy that one use is the king as Carl Ocab said in his post.

Blog commenting and guest posting has already driven lots of traffic to my blog.

I’m thinking of starting giveaways on my blog. And what about taking interviews?

    • Ehsan Ullah

    Salaam Ehsan =]
As usual an awesome article from you!
I genuinely find your tips useful and applicable as I have seen that people link to your content for giving reference to some of the point being discussed. Meanwhile you get traffic + HIGH authority back-link. So i find high-quality equally prospective like GUEST POST or even more.
I have a question to ask, if you don’t mind. Should I guest post when my blog only have 21 post? I am not sure, that readers from my guest post will like a blog with less content. My Niche:Tech

    Ramdaan Mubarak :)

      July 14, 2013 at 9:34 am #

Greetings Amaan, thanks for the compliment. :)
You can guest post on major blogs in your niche at anytime, even If your blog has only one post – 20 is great! The only thing that you need consider before guest posting on other blogs is that, your blog must be able to encourage new visitors to stay around. Are you building email list on your blog?
Happy Ramadan to you as well.

      • July 14, 2013 at 9:49 am #

No :/ , but I am using Feedburner. I dismissed the idea of making a email list as I think that the number of post on my blog and visitors are not that much. And keeping feed burner and separate newsletter thing together is good idea ?

        • Ehsan Ullah
          July 14, 2013 at 9:55 am #

Feedburner doesn’t work any more. I recommend you start with Mailchimp as It is free until you reach 2000 subscribers.
Number of posts doesn’t matter. You just need to let your readers know what they can expect from your blog, and what solutions you can provide to them. Let them know about it on your blog’s about page, or you could have created a welcome message in the beginning.
You know what, I submitted my firs guest post on a top blog when Guide and News had only 16 posts published?

          • July 14, 2013 at 10:03 am #

Feedburner doesn’t work anymore?, can you please elaborate ?. And do you any alternative to Mailchimp which is always free ? :P

          • Ehsan Ullah
            July 14, 2013 at 10:09 am #

Yep, because you have to build your own email list (a traffic stream) and wrest the control of your blog and list from Google.
Might be, but I’ve used MC and I’m in love with it. 2000 is a lot, and reaching that number of subscribers takes a lot of time. Have you heard of GetResponse?

          • July 15, 2013 at 9:23 pm #

Thanks for directing me here Ehsan, I’ve done all you listed above and yea! i’m using mailchimp i have just 1 campaign and i’ll be working on that later, i’ve also gotten a few numbers of subscribers, though not much. :) You made me remember my first post “welcome to viralwriter” well i was the happiest when i got my first comment on my blog.
