How to Use Google Plus for Everything – An Easy Guide to Google+

Social-media is the strongest revolution tool available to the public.

The immense popularity of social networking among youngsters have made this platform really productive.

Here by social media I am not referring to some other supernatural or extra-terrestrial social networking sites. It is the same common stuff which we use in our daily life like Facebook, Twitter and?

There are hundreds, millions of SMALL and BIG social networking sites; some are globally very popular while some receive a limited response from a specific country.

Out of those few globally popular social networking sites there is one site which we are going to focus on today which is the most useful, and best one for business, blogging and everything.

How to use Google plus

And that is Google Plus.

If you don’t know what is Google plus, or If you are not at Google Plus yet then please don’t tell me you’re a blogger. Believe me you’ve REALLY been living under a rock.

But, no problem! In this 2000+ word guide you’ll learn everything about Google plus, and how to use it for blogging, business and everything.

What is Google Plus?

With 500 million users as of December 2012, Google plus is the second largest social networking site on the web in terms of users and that number is increasing by thousands and millions every day.

Google plus popularly called the G+ is social networking site by the search engine giant GOOGLE launched in June 28th, 2011 which has gained the trust and popularity among the people so fast, especially in blogging and business.

Google+ is a Facebook like social networking site that also has all the features like Twitter, having features inspired from the other top social networking sites with some of It’s own really amazing and innovative features added to its interface.

Enough of the introduction, now let me show you how to use Google plus and how effective it can be for you.

How to use Google Plus?

Don’t you REALLY know how to use Google plus?

Okay, before we dive into the details of how to use Google Plus for blogging and business, let me start with how to actually use Google plus (I know how complicated Google plus is for newbies).

So let’s us start, and pay your full attention.

If you open your Google plus dashboard you will find most of the features same as you will find on Facebook or twitter

Here is a screenshot of your Google plus dashboard, what it looks like.

Google Plus Dashboard

It has a sliding options panel on the left which contains the basic navigation options and also some updates options on the top bar.

Now here’s the list options that you see on your Google plus dashboard.

The top navigation contains the following options which are to help you sort the updates properly

  • All: show the recent and highlighted updates from all your circles
  • Friends: shows updates only from the people whom you added in your friends circle
  • Family: shows updates only of your family members
  • Acquaintances: shows updates from your acquaintances
  • Following: shows updates from the people you are following
  • More: lets you choose your dashboard layout, grid or list

The sidebar navigation options contains:

  • Home: your updates dashboard
  • Profile: lets you view your profile and edit it
  • People: shows a list of people who have added you to their circles and lets you manage your own circles
  • Photos: lets you view your photos, manage them, take backups and other stuff
  • WhatsHot: displays the trending posts, topics and hashtags
  • Communities: similar to the group thing we have on Facebook
  • Events: Nothing new, helps you create events and invite people to them
  • Hangouts on Air: shows you a list of trending hangouts going live which you might find interesting
  • Pages: lets you create pages and manage them
  • Local: lets you find places near your current location or any other location
  • Games: need say it? Lets you play games on your social network

And settings.

If you can see all those things in your profile, than why I’m discussing them here? Am I just wasting your time?

It’s just that I want you to get an idea of the whole Google plus concept, and answer me wasn’t it helpful?

Using Google plus is no different from using any other social network like Facebook or twitter. You can post links, videos, photos, start a hangout or start a public discussion. You also have the flexibility to tag people in a status update like you have on Facebook.

Using this network for your business or blogging is similar to using any other network but only till the basics. Using it helps you connect with more people in your niche, increase your blogging productivity, and increase SEO

All those social media marketing basics you learned for Facebook and Twitter are same on Google plus and most of the things work the same way.

But, Google+ does a lot more than Facebook and Twitter.

It helps use gain authority as a content developer, and personalize how readers see us in Google search.

Using it helps you connect with more people in your niche, increase your blogging productivity, and increase SEO authority.

Google plus also holds a lot of possibilities for bloggers and businesses, only If you know how to use it well.

Here are some hard-to-find tips and advice on how to become an expert user of Google plus to improve your blog and business using this network.

1. Set up Authorship:

Google authorship is the most important If you run a WordPress powered blog or If you write guest posts on other blogs.

If the value of this isn’t obvious, there are a lot of benefits of getting Google authorship markup for your WordPress blog.

It helps in increasing the rankings in Google search, and makes people inclined to click on your link in search results.

If you’re confused on how to set up Google authorship for your blog or website, you’re not alone. Just give a read to my guide to verifying Google authorship I’ve written a while ago.

2. Get the most out of the features:

Google plus has a lot of features and if you need to get the maximum benefits out of this thing then you need to utilize your resources to their maximum.

If I start counting the features Google plus has to offer I am surely going to get tired (I also don’t have my energy drink at my table).

Let us take the example of the amazing Google plus hangout feature.

People are more likely to love content in video format as compared to the basic text so why not use this tool to get your business more clients or to gain more readership for your blog.

The first you should do today is plan a public Google hangout or a private one with few of your friends, talk to people face to face.

Tell them how awesome your services or your product is, and make an influence.

And if you have been reading guide and news regularly (it is compulsory) they will surely buy you, I mean your services.

The same goes with the authorship feature they have for webmasters and bloggers, connect your Google plus profile to your blog or website.

Show your face to people when they search something related to your product and if you look nice in your Google profile pic then you will see an increase in the number of clicks.

3. Add Google Plus Badge on Your Blog:

The Google plus badge allows your visitors to engage with you and add you in their Google+ circles directly from your blog.

There are number of ways to add it on your blog. You can use plugins for this, but I like to add a simple script for Google+ badge on my blog.

They’ll look like this:

Make sure to circle me If you haven’t already!

4. Don’t be a lazy:

Sorry if you felt bad but if you are lazy to fill out your profile and spend some time on this network then you can go no where.

See, there is a simple concept: People are likely to trust guys with a profile than the ones without one.

Relevant  - 5 Ways to Gain the Trust of Your Readers

If you are a brand (a blog or a local business) it is necessary for you to influence people and to influence people you need interact with them directly or indirectly.

And you need to accept the fact that people don’t interact with complete strangers, So if you want to get more returns from this social network or any social network you need first create a genuine identity

If you are able to impress people then it would be the time to tell them about your blog or your business using your profile by setting up Google authorship.

5. Take care of her kid:

Each business has a website and blogs, they are kind of websites.

And most websites receive major traffic from search engines, so which is the biggest search engine?

Obviously Google, we all know it.

And Google plus is a social network owned by…?

…Again Google.

Consider Google as your neighbor lady who has gone to shopping and made you babysit her kid.

She has promised to give you $10 if you keep her kid happy in her absence.

Now consider that kid as Google Plus.

I hope you got my point!

If you haven’t, let me be clear. If you actively use Google plus then Google will send more traffic to your website

There are more than 200 factors Google considers for ranking websites and with the launch of the author rank algorithm social media (especially g+) has started playing a vital role in determining search engine rankings.

Note: If you’re new to SEO, read my top 10 SEO optimization tips and SEO tips 2012 post to learn absolutely everything about SEO.

Discussing this algorithm in a bit detail: Google considers the number of +1s, comments and mentions your post has received and also keeps in mind your profile, your whole track record. This helps Google to rank your site to the appropriate position in results so that their users get the highest quality content on the topic they are searching on.

And higher you rank the more traffic you gain and you get more clients or subscribers.

6. Get out of the well:

If you want to get more results from using Google plus for your blog or business then you need to stop living under a rock.

You can skip this subhead if you are already connecting with more and more people daily.

But if you aren’t then answer me, where are you?

Don’t just bind yourself within some chains and focus on a specific group of people.

Go on, if they are not connecting with you or following you then why are you so hesitant. You take the first step and follow them.

Okay I know it would be quite shameful if you follow him from your official profile because if you do then he will think, What kind of cheap company is that! They want more clients at any cost.

So don’t compromise with your reputation and ask your employees or other friends to first connect with people in a general way like they would connect to in their personal life and then introduce your business to them.

This will help you gain more clients by contacting with more and more people without making any compromise with your self-respect.

Last but not the least…

7. Have a business page and engage:

Create a Google plus page for your blog or business If you haven’t yet, and let it be more popular.

If you don’t know how to create a page on Google+, read this tutorial on SME.

The best tip to grow your business through your page is to post interesting and useful content regularly; don’t just post the links to your products or latest blog posts.

And not just posting and having a page will fulfill your aim.

Apart from that you need to engage with your fans too and everyone wants “The Red Carpet” treatment.

Making your readers feel special is the only way to make them loyal to your brand and add them to your regular customers list.

You can also add the Google+ badge for pages on your blog.

That’s all I have for you in this post. Now before I sign off, let us just rewind what we read and go through a conclusion.

In this post I have discussed about social networking sites in the beginning, then focused on Google Plus and in the end I gave you some tips to use it more productively for your business and your blog.

  10. July 8, 2013 at 4:33 pm #

I am definitely not in love with G+ but with Google Authorship and other features that tie G+ into SEO it’s impossible not to take advantage of G+ at least to get content better integrated into search results. G+ reminds me more of LinkedIn than FB. It seems driven by business/service/product/website promotion rather than human connectivity, just like LinkedIn. The only people I know who champion G+ for its connection to other users are IT people who jumped in early. It’s my belief that if G+ was not so integrated with search it would be a dead project like all of Google’s past social media attempts.

    • Ehsan Ullah
      July 9, 2013 at 8:55 pm #

Wise words Adam, connecting interacting with other users who jumped in early works in not only G+, but every social media website. Personally, I don’t like LinkedIn, and don’t spent my time there because I want to focus on one at a time, and that’s Google Plus.

Thanks for your comment, hope to have ya back.

    Hi Ehsan

I do really enjoy using Google+ and thank you for such a thorough write up.

One thing I find frustrating about it though is that you can’t share to your personal page with many services like Hootsuite and Buffer.

    Hi there buddy,

I’ve been using Google+ from long time and everything that you’ve mentioned above is true to my knowledge. Especially, +1s and discussions around the blog posts matters a lot. Google authoriship is one another factor which can increase search engine(Google) ranking effectively.

Thank you Ehsaan for this detailed post on how to use Google+ efficiently.

Hey Pawan, good to see ya here after a while.

Glad you enjoyed my guide to Google+. You’re already killing it I know.
Have you enabled Google+ comments on your blog? What’s new with EBloggingHow?

      • June 28, 2013 at 7:53 pm #

No, I haven’t enabled Google+ comments at this point in time simply because of the one reason which keeps bothering me a lot. There are tonnes of spammers out there on internet who starts spamming through Google+ comments. Since, I (& no one) can moderate those comments, spammers have got free space to place the links.

Regarding eBloggingHow, it has just started getting attention. The recent post on it talks about bunch of bad SEO techniques. I hope you would read it and drop your views.

        • Ehsan Ullah
          June 29, 2013 at 6:11 pm #

Really? I thought Google+ comments is the solution of getting rid of spam comments. If they launched their commenting system for blogs, they could have launched the solution for spammers as well right?

BTW, did you just try yet?

You’re doing pretty darn good job there. I’ll surely check that article out :)

          • July 1, 2013 at 2:03 pm #

Yes, I did try their commenting system. What spammers do is they leave genuine comments or sometimes a small comment but it is accompanied by their blog/business website URL.

And, thank you for placing your views on article over at eBloggingHow. I’m eager to see your next article. :)

It’s a pleasure Pawan, that was a great piece of content. Next is on It’s way ;)

  22. June 27, 2013 at 7:05 pm #

I’m truly a novice when it comes to Google+ but after reading your post and a couple of others, I can see how i was living under a rock LOL… but at least I have my profile set up and the authorship. I just have to carry it out further. It’s time for a change from facebook to G+ anyways. I will definitely use your recommendations. Thanks again Ehsan!

    Hi Ehsan,

This is so good! I need to continue to learn more about Google+. I just installed ‘hangouts’ and need to learn more about them. I opened it up, saw myself and quickly turned it off. Need to have nice, maybe makeup so I don’t scare any one away. LOL

I’ll be bookmarking this post to use later when I’m ready to get ‘deep’ into G+. Thanks for sharing. Great job! Sally

    • Ehsan Ullah
      June 29, 2013 at 6:24 pm #

Hey Sally, glad I made a learning fun. Keep learning and let me know if you stuck at any point.

And hope to have a hangout with you sometime, but please make sure you makeup okay? ha ha.

  24. June 27, 2013 at 6:16 pm #

Another wonderful job explaining how to use Google+ Ehsan so thank you for that. You’ve becoming quite the expert when putting together inclusive guides. You don’t skimp on anything.

So I’m doing everything but having a business page. I hate it when new services start and then later implement other things after you are already doing in a particular direction. BUT, I am my brand so I think I’m good. I’m just not under the category of a business page. Do you know if I can switch that over?

Thanks again for this great post.

Hey Adrienne, great to have ya here. Glad you loved my guide to G+.
Well yeah, I love writing long and detailed articles on different topics, but sometimes I write short and exercise posts like this one.

You’re already a G+ expert Adrienne, I also don’t think you need one Adrienne, coz as you said you’re a brand of yourself and I agree with it :)

Wow, this is a very comprehensive article about G+. While I have been on G+ for sometime now, I have not seen any traffic generated to my site yet, but there is still time for that. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insight.

It definitely helps in increasing website traffic and rankings Tom! Have you set up the authorship yet?

  26. June 27, 2013 at 12:16 pm #

    Hello Ehsan,
I’d say that Google plus social network is the best thing after Facebook, Stumbleupon and twitter. G+ really do boost traffic and presence but only if you perform it well.

You truly explained the G+ in details which makes the post unique in its own way. Nice post and do have a lovely week ahead :)

      1. This post isn’t by a guest blogger
      2. The post explains only about Google+! Not Facebook or Twitter
      3. Who is Atish?

  28. June 27, 2013 at 11:29 am #

Ehsan this is an excellent post, and I shall be sharing it on Google plus :-). With Google being the biggest search engine and the one people want to rank in, it is daft to not use G+. Google will of course use their own social media network and keep on growing it so we must take advantage of it. And it isn’t a bad network either if I am honest, I quite like it since the recent changes.

Well said Andi, Google is the dad and G+ is the baby. So in order to convince the dad, we need to keep his baby happy right?
Google+ definitely plays a vital role in increasing search engine rankings.

I used to love G+ since I became familiar with it, It makes a blogger’s life easier.

      Thanks for dropping in Andi.

It’s magic of social media that you find a whole community of your niche but the magic of Google Plus is that you live that community and you can hangout with them so easily apart from sharing unlimited post and sending unlimited friend request that make it ahead of rest of the social media. Great tips Ehsan you are doctor of Google+, great

    Hi Ehsan,

Reading your post after a long time, and your magic is still there, awesome detailed post about Google+ for bloggers, Thanks for sharing these tips!

Where are you keeping yourself busy these days, GBT?

  35. June 26, 2013 at 7:25 pm #

    Ehsan, Awesome article.
Google+ is necessary to grow your website and get better position in SERP’s, but i feel that you can’t have a good social circle with your friends and family on it. Still Google+ lacks in it, no one liked in my friends to come there and have discussions.
P.S. You can never compare Facebook and Google+, both are beneficial. :)

      June 26, 2013 at 8:49 pm #

      Hey Anmol,

Well said, Google+ works with everything. You can have a different circle for your friends and family there, and It’s hangout feature makes it worth it use.

Maybe your friends find it complicated to use G+? Why not send them to this article so they can learn the concept.

      • June 27, 2013 at 8:24 am #

I would love to share, but my friends would kill me if i again say them to join me to Google+ :P It tried many times, they hate it very much :D

    Hey Ehsan,

We can’t forget Google plus as bloggers. Specially, Google plus is the best social networking site for web masters. So far, Facebook and Twitter is popular than Google plus. But Google plus has a unbelievable future as I think :-)

Why did you remove commentluv plugin on your blog?

    • Ehsan Ullah
      June 26, 2013 at 6:11 pm #

Hey Raplus, great to have ya back after a while.

G+ is more effective and does more than FB and Twitter, no matter If It isn’t popular then ‘em right now. I don’t see you there? Have you added me in your circle yet?

I’m just loving the standard WP comments these days, I’ll add Commentluv back soon.

Found your blog and read about your post about how to use Google plus and here’s what’s funny. When Google plus first arrived on the scene, I thought nothing of it. I said, big deal. Heck, is it a big deal but I wondered to myself, if it was such a big deal, why isn’t everyone actively using it like they do with Facebook?

I’ve been using the interface and the groups and I must say that I love the clean layout and how smooth it is compared to Facebook.

The users aren’t spammy like they are on twitter and Facebook and I find myself noticing that the Google plus users are a little bit more mature. With that said, it’s not being properly utilized to it’s full potential.

I’m glad I found your blog. Will be coming back for more!

Hey Nate, glad you found this post and commented. There’s a lot more ;)

Great points, G+ users are real and serious with their business and whatever they do. It’s fun to interact with them in different communities. I used to be more active on Twitter before, but I realized the importance of Google+ later. The key here is to use it productively.

Thanks for dropping by, hope to have ya back.

    Hello Ehsan,
I guess I’m the first one to comment this time ;-)

I really appreciate you for writing this article. Because many people under-estimate Google as yet another useless social media.
However, in reality we as bloggers can make a great use of Google+ rather than any other social media !

Great Post and keep posting ! :-D
