How To Build An Everlasting Traffic Source of Your Own to Your Blog

What If Google decides to drop all your rankings today, or Facebook shuts down your fan page, or If Twitter deletes your profile?

Would you want to be in a position to lose all your online income, reputation and business?

Of course, you’d like to control your blog and your online business yourself, and don’t want to let Google, Facebook or Twitter control it. Right?

To wrest the control of your blog from those sites, you’ve to develop your own traffic stream to your blog.

Now don’t get me wrong. By building your own traffic stream, I’m not saying you should ignore sources like Google, Facebook and Twitter completely. Those are the best sites to drive traffic to your blog.

What you need to do is siphon traffic from those sources to your blog, capture their names and emails, and create your own traffic stream.

traffic source

This is also a top class advice for you If you’re stuck of working for search engines, optimizing your posts, and building backlinks etc. It can be an alternative traffic source for you.

Building your own traffic source:

Now before you get into building your own traffic source, I would like to tell you one thing that one of the most important thing that is needed to make money blogging is TRUST (other than traffic of course).

It’s the trust you gain and relationship you build with your visitors that will help you make money with your blog, so you need to learn ho to gain the trust of your readers at first.

Trust, relationship and honesty will go a long way in making people love your blog and make them loyal to you.

And trust of your visitors cannot be gained in just one or two visits to your blog. Therefor It is extremely important that you do your best capture the names and email addresses of as many visitors of your blog as possible.

To get their names and emails, starting a blog and an email list is very important, and It’s the most important thing that you should focus on as a blogger.

An email list is a group of people who have subscribed to your blog, It builds loyal readers and loyal readers are the ones that will help you grow your blog.

So, ones your visitors enters their details to your blog, they’ll get into your email list and that’s where you’ll begin the process building relationship and trust with them.

Instead of waiting for traffic, If you’ve an email list of 100+ subscribers only you can hit send and get a lot of attention to your new blog posts.

How to build an email list:

If you’re new to email marketing, you need to find a good email marketing software first, I recommend Aweber or Mailchimp. These two services lets you put forms on your blog easily, and comes with auto follow-ups to deliver eBooks and newsletters.

Getting started with building your first email list won’t take too long. Building my first form and putting it on my blog didn’t take more than a hour, I started collecting email subscribers.

If you’re completely new to email marketing, and need help in designing forms, putting it on your blog and increasing subscribers etc, I suggest you read my friend Greg’s email marketing 101 post.

How to convince readers to subscribe and grow your traffic stream:

Firstly you need to learn how to convince readers to subscribe and making them love your blog.

No one wants to give their email to a sketchy source. In order to really get subscribers, you need to know how to add value to their life, you have to offer them something that would be enough to make them love your blog.

Here are the four possible ways to increase email subscribers.

  • Create multiple forms and put on different pages of your blog:

No one will want to give their email to you the first time they visit your blog, so you need to put the optin form to different and most popular pages of your blog and show them often times to encourage them to subscribe.

  • Create a landing page:

One of the best way to let people know about your email list (traffic source) is to write a new page for it highlighting the benefits of subscribing to your blog. Write about the free stuff If you’re offering to your subscribers and about other goodies they can expect from you in your landing page.

  • Offer an eBook:

A killer eBook on a helpful topic will bring a lot of email subscribers to you. I’ve got great feedback and hundreds of subscribers when I launched my first ever eBook launch called “Starting a blog 101” which is still FREE at the moment, but It won’t be forever.

  • Show social proof:

If you’ve already got a decent subscribers count already, show the numbers to your readers or If you’ve featured on a top blog or website, let your readers know about it because If readers know that you’re good enough at what you do and you can serve their need, they’ll be more likely to subscribe to your blog.

Checkout the community page of my blog to get an idea.

What now? Get the traffic source in action:

Now, If you got a steady flow of subscribers, you need to set your autoresponder with some killer content. This content can be blog posts, eBooks, podcasts or videos that you think your subscribers will love.

Get your subscribers involved. Ask them to tweet, share or LIKE your posts, Ask them to comment and ask their questions as this will help you build strong relationship with them.

You need to make your subscribers feel that they know you not only because you send them quality emails, but because they interact with you on your blog, ask their question. Let them know you as a problem solver.

You have to make sure you’re honest with your subscribers. Be honest from the first email about what your intentions are. Focus on providing great content with incredible value to your subscribers.

If you’re a blogger, you have to have a lot of traffic and visitors to make money from your blog! But you also have to make sure your blog has to be built on a foundation of trust and honesty. That’s what will help you grow your blog and make money online.

Good luck with your new traffic source, now tell me what’s up in the comments section.

Hi Ehsan, this is my first visit to your websitee. I enjoyed your article and got good advice from you. Sure, everybody needs to do something about their traffic because getting penalized from google, fb or twitter can cause a big loss.
I have seen it that many experts says,” The money is in list”. And this is where most responsive and caring readers are.
I, myself, have started building list but it is just going average. I have not applied all tips and advice given by experts. Now, i think i should apply them.
    Well, thanks for sharing.

I started email marketing about 3 months ago. But actually, i have not focused on it because i had to do many other tasks. In early months of blogging, as you know, traffic is very low so i was focusing on traffic generation and content building. Now, i am getting good traffic and i think i should take llist building seriously.

Email list is something that should be started from day 1, because that’s the most important thing that a blogger (in any niche) should focus the most on. Ohh you were focusing on other traffic generation methods, but an email list is an everlasting traffic source, or It’s not?

Nice to see ya back, Arslan.

    Hi Ehsan,
Thanks for sharing these great ideas on how to build effective traffic sources. I couldn’t agree with you more that creating long-term relationships with subscribers is much better than ‘intuitive’ blogging which doesn’t use any strategies at all. I totally agree with you that providing value to the audience is the best answer to the question of how we can reach our goals.

Traffic is what drives the blog to the path of the success. Hence there is a constant need for finding solutions which can provide the constant traffic to keep the blog on the right track. I used to have the email list of my readers, but I find this task very cumbersome and engaging. So few months back, I lost the control of the email list which I had build. But email list do has its advantages. Thanks for the share.

Hi Ehsan, building it, building it… Have an email list is the best, some bloggers said that it’s a big big mistake that they didn’t have their email list so I’d recommend everybody should get an email list as their blog is launch. Once the email list is launched following the guide that you put up there is way to go.

    Hi chris
I know what you are saying here but if Facebook and twitter went they would always be replaced with something else that keeps people connected socially now as it is an integral part of people’s lives and only seems to be going one way. The main key I am taking from this post is not to rely on it. Take use of it nut don’t rely on it and make use of other streams that way you will have multiple traffic and income streams .

    So for that thanks lee

    Hi Ehsan,

It’s definite that this is really working for you. With the tempo of activity on this blog it is clear that building ones own traffic stream is the right way to go. Google and blog commenting may be good but when you have something you can control, it’s simple super.

  40. March 18, 2013 at 4:47 pm #

This is a great post! And I agree with you ‘building a list’ is one of the most important factor when we are in the online universe. If we are very attentive to what is happening right now, building a list is also being apply offline. If we look on supermarkets, they are now starting to get contact details of their costumers like email addresses. Simply because this is much easy way to get in touch with the costumers.

While if we are online… And if you’re promoting anything to your website. You can;t expect everyone to buy from you once they’ve seen your offer. Some will do but most are not. and the power of capturing their contact details (i.e email address) you can follow up to them, build relationship and show them more about you and your offer at the end they usually ‘just buy’ from you. :-)

Hey Monica, nice to see ya here with an attractive comment.

Awesome point, asking for people’s contact details is a great idea to stay in touch with them, than showing them what you can offer and what they can expect from your blog.

great and much useful info! Yes, indeed Trust is the most important factor for success of a blog and blog traffic does comes along side with it. Trust and honesty are the important factors to make people engage on blog and hence making them loyal readers, however it’s requires patience and consistency to do so.

What’s new with your mailing list?

  44. March 18, 2013 at 1:51 am #

I recently started my mailing list the other day and I must say that I am having success with growing it.

I like the points that you mentioned in the front about if you stopped getting traffic from Google, Facebook or Twitter.

Those are great sources of traffic . But if they should stop sending you traffic then having a mailing list is a great source to build your own traffic.

So it is wise and important to start and grow one as fast as possible.

Thanks for the awesome post pal. :)

One of my favorites is building a list, this helps you connect with your readers on a long term basis by educating & informing them on things that will help them grow themselves & earn the success they are looking for.

Building a list can also be a slow process therefore you must be patient with it, find out what works & what doesn’t work:)

    Loved the post Ehsaan!

I wonder what we would do if there was no Facebook, Twitter, or G+ – yes, and such a day can come anytime, and then to think what would happen to your shares, or how would you get traffic to your blog would be of no use.

I totally agree with you that the traffic on your blog should depend on how you build relationships with your readers, which only happens once they visit your blog, know you better, interact with you, become a part of your community, share and like your posts – what more can you ask for!

All of this happens with time and patience, which I am glad is working for me without making much of effort as yet. You rightly mentioned, when the readers develop trust and faith in you – all of this becomes possible. Once they know what you share, teach, guide or explain is the truth and a way of helping them, there’s no way they wouldn’t reach out to connect with you on their own. I guess you don’t even need any opt in or other means, though yes, people say you do need them to increase your subscribers and all of those things. After reading more about email list etc – I too went ahead with Aweber, as a better choice out of the two you mentioned, though still have to ask people to subscribe the way you mentioned. I guess I don’t have that killer approach as you do, which again I need to learn :)

And yes, mostly people look for free stuff or something in return when they subscribe, something which I need to work on too, though I really don’t like that concept much as I feel it a person genuinely likes your blog – you don’t need to attract them through many ways, other than just being true, honest, helpful, and yourself through your posts. But I understand your point that everyone isn’t made that ways, and you need to work on attracting people too – again something I need to learn!

Ah…lots of lessons am taking back home from your post, so thanks so much for sharing this with us. On a second note – you just impressed me to subscribe to your blog…and I did notice you don’t have a RSS button on your blog (or did I miss seeing it?), so that’s another catchy way to get people to subscribe if they want to keep in touch with your posts – isn’t it?

Thanks for sharing this with us, and have a great weekend too. :)

      March 17, 2013 at 4:38 pm #

Hey Harleena, thanks for the awesome comment – and as usual, glad you have ya here with a quality and useful comment.

Of course, when you build relationship with people and gain their trust, than when you launch a product or recommend something they’ll buy it from you because of the TRUST you built.

Awesome point you raised here that ones people know what you share, and what they can expect from you, they’ll be more likely to connect with you, but having an email list (Traffic source) is the way to let them know it. Nice to know you started with Aweber and It’s working good for you. :) I think you’re already doing great with your blog, just think out of the box when asking for people to subscribe and use different strategies to encourage them to love your blog.

Giving away a free stuff that you think is useful for people in return is a great way to get more subscribers. I really like the concept and a person only get your stuff when he/she genuinely like your blog – Tough sometimes people subscribe to my blog just to get the eBook and unsubscribes after getting it.

Haha, thanks so much for subscribing Harneela, hope you enjoy my emails. You got it, I don’t use RSS button because I want people to join my COMMUNITY.

      Thanks for the great comment.

Great post Ehsan -I finally got to my MailChimp and started using it once I published my eBook. Love how it works! That is a had thing for a blogger to do – build an email list but it’s more important now like with the Google Reader going away. People need to see your latest posts. Hey Ehsan,

I couldn’t agree with you more about not spending all your energy on social media sites and SEO because they are out of your control. You can spend an entire year growing a great Twitter following but if you lose your account, there isn’t much you can do.

The number one goal of a blogger should be to get subscribers because that is the one way you can connect with your readers that people can’t take away from you.

    Great post as always :)

Finally someone gets it. Building a list is THE way to make money online. However, it is not as simple as sending out an email to your list to get them to your blog…

Copywriting is one of the BEST skills to have that will create impulse in people. Creating impulse is the difference between people needing to be on your list, and people thinking about it. It’s also the difference between a highly responsive list….

    …and a list of emails.

Love the post. I think it’s about time someone started to figure it out. Another great idea to entice them to join your email list is training videos. Brand yourself through video. Your list will LOVE IT!!!

You are you are correct it is about the quality not necessarily the quantity of subscribers. As the saying goes the money is in the list. Too much reliance on Google for traffic most of the time ends up with a disaster because of brutally frequent panda updates. That is why just like monetization in traffic generation too one should not put all eggs in one basket. For this purpose rss feed, email list, social media accouts are best sources to develop regular community apart from google traffic. Well said in this post that “Firstly you need to learn how to convince readers to subscribe and making them love your blog”. Thanks for sharing

    • Ehsan Ullah
      March 16, 2013 at 6:56 pm #

Awesome point Edson, and nice to see ya here.

The problem is that I know bloggers not learning from their mistakes & still not using email marketing after being kicked by Panda and Penguin updates.

Glad you liked that sentence :)

      Hope to see ya back.

  61. March 16, 2013 at 12:09 pm #

    Hi Ehsan,
I agree with you that we shouldn’t just base our traffic sources on those sites alone because of any uncertainty.

Building an email list is really what we have to start. I’m using imnica mail for my email marketing and i like them. Why i don’t like mailchimp is because you cannot use the autoresponder on the free package. I can’t equally afford aweber for now.

Although I’ve not been very serious with my email marketing, that’s another thing i have to put more efforts into.

    Thanks for sharing man.

Hey Theodore, thanks for the tweet (Just received notification). And as usual good to have ya here.

To be honest, First time hearing about the Imnica mail. Is it an effective email marketing service like Aweber or Mailchimp? what’s your experience so far?

I’ve been using Mailchimp from long time on my blog, and I’m very happy with their service.

Email marketing is the most important thing you should focus on as a blogger.

      Thanks for your comment.

      • March 17, 2013 at 7:16 pm #

        Hi Ehsan,
Imnicamail is such an awesome one. They are very good and I’m sure you will like them.

They also offer a free package just like mailchimp. But with their free package, you have access to all their services including the autoresponder.

You’ll have upto 2000 emails with their free one. Just check it out and see for yourself. Do let me know what you think.

I stopped using Mailchimp the day i sent my subscribers an email telling them about the new post i published on my site, mailchimp then suspended my account saying that i sent an affiliate link while the email i sent does not contain any such.

The other thing is that you cannot use their autoresponder on the free package and its not for affiliate marketers because they don’t allow it.

Imnica does not have such issues…. Check it out bro.

        • Ehsan Ullah
          March 18, 2013 at 3:33 pm #

Mailchimp has kinda strict rules with their free package, you’re right.

  62. March 16, 2013 at 11:30 am #

    HI Ehsan,

Short-break has really charged you and the post affirms that.

Coming to your post, I totally subscribe to your view point and believe Email list is the best option for evergreen traffic. Facebook, twitter and others if supposedly become unavailable, email list is the one on which can rely on for evelasting traffic.

I’ve been advised by my fellow bloggers to start with this, but still couldn’t get it implemented on my blog. Will’ve to start that soon.

Opt-in is very much required and this will help in getting the prior consent of the “TO-BE” readers or followers, we cannot bombard emails to the one’s who have not opted for. I think laws in EU/USA if I’ve read them correctly clearly states that prior consent is required.

Correct me if I’m on wrong on this one.

Thanks for this great share. Have a great weekend.

Just took a short break because of the procrastination, Sapna. Now I’m back.

As usual, It’s a pleasure to have ya here.

Than I’m another one advising you to start an email list today, and If you can’t afford to pay to paid email marketing services like Aweber, than start with Mailchimp which is free. Kindly let me know when you need help regarding any step of building your new traffic source, Sapna.

It’s illegal to send emails to those who haven’t opted for, you’re absolutely right on this.

      Thanks for the great comment.

          What about yours?

  64. March 16, 2013 at 9:11 am #

You are so right about uncertainty if ever there are problems that will occur on Google, Facebook or Twitter which of course is a very important tool to drive traffic. We must have a backup plan so that our business will not just freeze just because we are depending on other resources to function.

Building E-mail list is one of the hardest task in blogging world but if you have the trust factor in your blog, it becomes easy.

One of the most interesting articles on your blog. Building email list is great. But to bring a significant amount of traffic you will need to have a big list :(
    That is the problem

Thanks Shahzad, glad you found this one interesting, & as usual nice to have ya here.

You don’t need a big list to bring traffic and make sales Shahzad. What you need is a list of loyal and engaging subscribers who TRUST you. A list of 100 loyal subscribers who trust you is a lot better than a list of thousands of inactive subscribers.

What’s up in your side Shahzad? How many subscribers you’ve got so far?

    • March 17, 2013 at 9:51 am #

      Yes, it is!

I couldn’t control myself from reading this post, I even expressed my thrilled over his G+ :P

I think, Ehsan, you have covered a most interesting topic, and it deserves a read.

Hi Ehsan!! That’s nice.. Can you tell me which is better AWeber or MailChimp ?

      • Ehsan Ullah
        March 17, 2013 at 3:11 pm #

If you can afford to pay the monthly fees, than Aweber is much better, but Mailchimp is for starters, and has all the features that Aweber gives you. The one problem with Mailchimp is that you can’t use the autoresponders in free version.

Thanks for stopping by, hope to see ya back Dhruve.

Definitely to build a healthy amount of traffic from email lists you need a large number of subscribers.

I do recommend freebies like ebooks, video tutorials to build email list.

The most amazing fact about this article is – it discuss how to built an authority in your niche first, if your readers does not convince with your articles(posts) how they will subscribe for your post or even will not try to get your free ebooks or anything.

So the point of this article is- first of all define your domain and convince everyone coming to your blog, and this will help any blogger to create a big subscriber list. If i am wrong anywhere , correct me my dear friend.
