The Difference/Deciding Between Starting a Blog and Buying a Blog

If you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time, you’ll know that I RARELY accept guest posts, but I’m glad to publish this one contributed from one of my blogging buddy, Shahzad of which is a guide on difference and deciding between starting a blog and buying a blog.

If you’ve ever wanted a guide to deciding between starting a blog or buying a blog – this is a post for you to bookmark for future reference.

Please give Shahzad a warm welcome, enjoy the post and SHARE.

Start a blog or buy a blog

If you are regular visitor of the guide to blogging community, you might have found a lot of articles discussing about starting a blog from scratch. You might have also read the eBook on starting a blog 101 written by Ehsan.

Being said that, It’s really difficult to start a blog from scratch and take It to the next level. You know It needs a lot of time and hard work.

I rather find buying blog as a much easier and better task comparing to starting a newer one again and have recently bought one myself.

But, It does need some kind of skill and knowledge, so If you’ve never had a blog before, and want to start your first one – than starting might be a better decision for you rather than buying.

When should you start a blog?

Though I am a great fan of buying an existing blog that has nice traffic, engaging community and quality content, buying blog is not a right decision for everyone.

Here I’ll explain who should consider starting a blog instead of buying.

1. If you are total newbie:

If you are new to blogging or any other kind or internet business I’ll suggest you to start a blog from scratch instead of buying an existing one.

Buying blog can be much riskier especially because you got to spend nice amount of money for the acquisition. So better to create a new blog and learn how internet business and marketing works.

Starting out is always easier. You just need to buy a domain and hosting, install and set up WordPress, start to write content and publish it. It is about spending less. So obviously risk is also less.

2. If you don’t want to spend enough money:

Are you looking for spending some bucks for buying a quality blog? Then for sure, you are on the wrong way.

There were days when people sold out their high traffic blogs for few bucks. It was before the advent of Flippa. But now things have been changed a lot. You can never get a quality blog for few bucks.

I said spend ‘enough’ only not more. You can still bargain. But never ever try to get a low quality blog. It would not be a right decision for long run.

3. If you don’t want to take risk:

For me buying is breeze. It is like playing a game ;) Full of fun…

However, buying a blog can be much riskier if don’t know what each and every Google Analytics data indicates.

Before jumping to buy a blog, you are required to analyze the Analytics and earning stats of the blog and should determine the performance and potential of it.

Anyhow, after buying never expect that everything will be going as you wish. So be prepared to take risk or just go on and start a blog instead of buying.

When you should buy a blog?

2 months ago I was just a below average blogger… with no yearly blogging plans, no enthusiasm, striving harder for getting more traffic to my old blog. To be honest I was literally trying to reinvent the wheel.

But I’ve made a better decision. I moved forward and found a suitable blog in my passionate niche and just bought it.

Within 60 days since the acquisition I’ve learned a lot, create more recognition for myself in the blogosphere, crossed my overall monthly earning records and still moving forward to cover more milestones.

Though buying can be risky. There are a lot of advantages of buying blog. Here are some of them.

1. Leeeaaaap forward in blogging:

Building blog from the ground up is very very slow process.

At first you got to get a good domain name and hosting. Secondly install WordPress, themes and necessary WordPress plugins on your host.

Then craft some content that no one reads. Go everywhere in the world and spread the word of your blog.

Trying to start link building??…Stop!? Wait until Google sandbox period is over. Hunt for traffic and repeat the whole process forever. Got tired? Check the stats… you got pissed, right?

Nuff said… This is why I prefer buying blog. Just buy it and start rocking! It is so simpler.

2. Merge with your current site:

Do you have any kind of website or blog and wanted to bring it to next level?

Then you should buy another site on the same niche and merge it with your current website or blog. Now you’ll have a single website with more content, increased traffic and obviously that make more money!

Merging of many sites to a single site can be a nice idea especially if you have more than one website with high quality content and each have less traffic.

3. To sell it again:

Buying and selling blogs can be a great business. But in this case you got to be more professional.

If you are buying a blog for selling it again for big price, then you should spend more time to write more great content, to get more traffic and to monetize it further.

This may take few months or years. However, once you find that your blog has grown to saturated level beyond which it would harder to get more traffic and make more money, consider selling it for big price.

Note that having nice performance stats for your blog means more money you can make it by selling it away.

4. Buying is great investment:

If I had more money I would have consider buying more online digital assets as investment rather than investing it on offline premises.

By buying a website you are building a business. According to your approach this can be considered as either passive or active business.

Comparing to offline investments, online investment would have higher ROI (Return on Investment).

Final thoughts:

If you are someone who is literally reinventing the wheel on your blog, I would suggest you to look back and learn where you’ve made mistake.

Check if the niche you are blogging is a right one. Start considering building another one or buying, but make sure that you never do the mistakes again!

Over to you:

So what do you think about buying or building blogs? Share your thoughts in comments section.

buying a blog is definitely a risk because you cant predict whether the seller is legit or not. sometimes they give false details and everything goes wrong. this is not good for blogging. but sometimes it may be beneficial..

    • March 1, 2013 at 2:43 pm #

If you have experience and knowledge of buying blogs, than the seller can’t fraud you, so learning the skills is must at first. And yes your first blog should be started from scratch.

you are right ehsaan but i recently heard that a person cheated soumya pratihari..he did not deliver the theme. i think soumya is experienced as he is one of the best bloggers in india. but still the seller cheated him so we can not trust everyone even if we are experienced.

No matter what option you choose, bear in mind that you can always jazz up your blog with your own creativity and hard work. It doesn’t really matter if you choose to create or to purchase a blog.

    • Ehsan Ullah
      February 20, 2013 at 4:01 pm #

Agreed with you Stacey, you have to build up the blog in our own direction, no matter If you start from scratch or buy one.

  14. February 19, 2013 at 10:52 am #

I’d definitely go for starting your own blog. Because you get to endure the struggle, you get to have all the hard work setting up your blog. Isn’t it more rewarding that you can say, I made this, and I’m proud of it!

  15. February 19, 2013 at 7:33 am #

It doesn’t really matter if you choose either way. If you have enough money to purchase a blog, then good for you. But if you rely on creativity and your ability to make your blog an interesting one for your targeted readers, that’s better. Actually, I’d recommend starting your own blog especially when you’re a novice, starting blogger. That way, you will know the basic steps and ascend your way to more complicated ones.

    • Ehsan Ullah
      February 20, 2013 at 4:05 pm #

Thanks for sharing your views Veronica, I think you can speed up the things in your own direction not only when you start from scratch, but also when you buy a blog.

BUT, yes learning the basic steps is must.

  16. February 19, 2013 at 1:13 am #

Great insights! I agree that there’s a huge difference between starting a blog and buying a blog. In start a blog it will be all from scratch starting with PR N/A and DA 1, but the backlink profile is clean. When buying a blog you should consider not the PR and DA. You should also check the link profile of the blog before you buy it. This will determine if the seller’s blog has a clean backlink profile and not penalized by major search engines.

    • Ehsan Ullah
      February 19, 2013 at 2:39 pm #

Great suggestion JV, checking a blog’s backside profile is must before considering to buy it.

      Thanks for stopping by.

    Whoa Suresh!
Really glad to see you here and to know that you are interested in buying and selling blogs. As we’ve discussed about selling blog earlier I am really curious to know the sale.

So that is your second or third blog sale, right?
Did you sell it on Flippa? Found a listing there but it was unsuccessful.

    About your question:
Building and selling blogs can be great. But I think it would be harder if you wanted to maintain yourself both your main blog and the blog that you wish to sell,

I will suggest you to outsource the work (writing) of the blog you wish to build and sell for some months. And sure, if you do so then it is worth the effort.
Let me know what you think

I recently sold one of my blog (seommotips) and building up the current blog. How about building and selling blogs? Will it worth the effort?

People always want to condense their work, so their predilection is to buy a blog. But it doesn’t help them. I think to set up a new blog is much superior than buying a new blog. We should do hard work to create a it, efforts to improve it, in this way, we can experience many things, ups and downs, and will discover more about it….:)

    • February 16, 2013 at 5:49 pm #

Indeed true! Starting a new blog will help experience new things and learn a lot, but needs a lot of time and hard work. While buying a blog is easy to go, and It’s for those who already has experience.

  28. February 13, 2013 at 5:54 pm #

    Hello Shahzad,

I would say, you can buy a blog if you have some experience in blogging, and experience comes by trying, by doing things.

Buying a blog means you’ve to understand its layout, and the perfect way to work on it, most importantly you’ve to find history about that blog, because if there’s a bad history behind a blog then you can’t expect a better future, because bad past keeps chasing.

It’s good to collect as much as information you can collect on the blog you are planning to buy. It will help you to create a successful plan to run it perfectly.

When it comes to starting a blog, i’d say there’s not any specified time or day. You can start one when you feel like starting one, when your heart is burning with your passion, when your head is full with inspiration, when you see your goals clearly, when you want to start one.

No one can ever tell you when you need to start a blog, not even me or someone else, only you know the answer, just search inside you and you’ll find.

Starting a blog is not a big deal, but keeping it balanced and running is something that requires sweat, and creativity. :)

    • February 14, 2013 at 10:36 am #

      You speak good Romy :D,
And as you said starting a blog is not a big deal but obviously running and especiall making money from it is the problem.
      Totally Agreed with you :)

      • February 14, 2013 at 10:41 am #

        Thanks for the endor….

Yeah! taking first step of any journey is easy but continuously walking on the same path takes more than we thought. ;) Sometime people even get lost in the scenario that they see around them and forget about their destination.

    • February 14, 2013 at 11:44 am #

Hey Romy, Great to see ya here after long time.

I agree with your words that experience comes by doing and trying things, so in order to learn the skills and experience of buying online blogs, you have to start at first and learn the process.

Thanks for adding value Romy, always great to have you here.

And yes, congrats with the launch of FallenWriters, what’s your plans so far?

      • February 14, 2013 at 11:49 am #

        Hello Ehsan,

Yeah! It’s been a long time. But now I’m back as a regular reader of your blog and often contributor also. ;)

I think you know what my plans are, Right! I’m in the race of being a good writer and sharing words that makes people move, and I want to win this race, anyhow.

Anyways, thanks for greeting and wishes.

Always great to have you here, that would be great.

I wish you best of luck with the race, I’m actually kinda sure that you’ll win sooner than later this race.

Excellent and detailed post! Well yes, if one is new to blogging/online world, then it’s better to start a blog, rather than buying an existing blog. But, if one is required to buy an existing blog, one should determine the potential of it. But, I would say, If one has more money, then buying an existing blog is a better choice. Thanks for sharing and tweeted it :)

  31. February 13, 2013 at 5:07 am #

Another amazing post by Ehsan. Great job.

I think what hits me here is the money side of it. As a new blogger its all about “how can I make it big for free”. We see hosting and domains as unnecessary because we’re clever enough to make it for FREE.

But this just doesn’t hold up.

Given that we can pay for domains/hosting, I see no reason not to pay for a whole blog!

It’s just, which to buy?? Maybe Shahzad has the answers…

    • February 13, 2013 at 5:32 am #

You make your new blog a great place to talk about blogging. You’re good at that.

Buying a whole blog is about buying the contents and its audience. That’s why I love it.
      Thanks for stopping by

    • February 13, 2013 at 3:11 pm #

Always great to have you hear Greg,

Buying a whole blog needs you to have more money than starting from scratch If you want to buy a reputable blog, even If you pay for domain/hosting and even some premium stuff.

Have you ever considered buying a blog, Greg?

  32. February 12, 2013 at 6:42 pm #

Great post Shahzad, I have to be really honest though I’ve never considered buying a blog, however I can definitely vouch for your statement that building a blog from the ground up is epic hard work.

I have considered selling one or two of my blogs that I’ve built up though in the past, but only when it was making some decent money and it had good traffic, but since Google Panda and Penguin some of those blogs dropped in traffic and income numbers so selling them wouldn’t have been a good idea.

I bought a couple of domains back in December and at some stage would like to build a blog or two with some traffic and monetization and maybe sell them on in a year or two.

Anyway just wanted to say a very educational post and one to bookmark for sure, thanks again and thanks Ehsan for publishing this.

It is great to read your story Fabrizio.

  33. February 12, 2013 at 3:07 pm #

    Hi Shahzad,
    Superb post man.
I recently got successful in selling one of my blogs for a 4-figure and learned pretty much out of the auction.
As about the post, I would prefer to create a blog from scratch rather than just buying a blog. By this way, I will know that there won’t be any illegal strategies involved with a purchased blog, also I will be able to ave complete control on the outcome of my blog, performance-wise and even earnings-wise.

So I would always create a completely new blog so that I would be able to learn many things in the particular niche selected that I could use up in the future.

However thanks for the great post.
    Cheers :)

    • February 12, 2013 at 3:59 pm #

Hey tiny blogger, nice to see ya here.

As Daniel Scocco said above in his comment that everyone’s first blog should be started from the scratch because It does help you learn the skills and ropes – And when you have enough experience and money, you can buy a blog to sell it for more profits or to work on it.

Thanks for dropping in Arbaz, you’re doing good job on TinyBlogger and loved your post on John Chow’s money making strategies. Who’s next?

      • February 13, 2013 at 12:40 pm #

        Hey Ehsan,
Glad to know that you loved the post. I just wanted to write about John Chow but now I am thinking of writing a complete series on this.
So trying to jot down all the top bloggers for my upcoming posts.

        • February 13, 2013 at 2:59 pm #

It’s a great way to let them know about your blog, and to build relationship with other bloggers.

Looking forward to your future posts on the series :)

          Thanks for droppin’ in.

    • February 12, 2013 at 6:05 pm #

      Hi Arbaz,
Really glad to here your story of selling your blog. The main advantage of buying is the job will speed up. As I said you don’t need to wait for a long time by publishing first few articles which no one reads and waiting for traffic and all other slow stuffs.

If you can analyze the performance by its Analytics and earning stats, there is nothing to worry about Arbaz.

But if you want to learn about blogging more, it is better to start one.
Thanks for your valuable comment bro!

        Hey Shahzad,
Your point of view is correct. Buying an already established blog do speed up the process. But when you are buying a blog, means you are investing some big money in it. So you will have to take care at all the variables of the blog – traffic, earnings, social influence etc. before buying it.
And once you do buy a blog, chances are that you might find it difficult to sell it for a profit or it might take a long time to find a someone who will purchase it at your price.
IMO, I would prefer to start a blog with low investment and work on it for 2-3 months and flip it. This way, the profit margin would be much better.
        What do you say ?

        • February 13, 2013 at 3:02 pm #

I would say both has It’s benefits Arbaz, first blog should be started from scratch and when you started making money from blogging and learned the skills and experience than consider buying and selling blogs, It’s a big online business, isn’t it Shahzad?

          • February 13, 2013 at 4:22 pm #

            That’s right Ehsan!
In addition, If you can’t afford enough money never try to buy a blog because quality site will never be available for peanuts. So here the nice option would be starting from scratch.

        • February 13, 2013 at 4:19 pm #

          Hmm… difficult question.
If you start a blog from zero and work on it for next 6 months (3 months is less period of time), I don’t think that it will have attained big traffic or made even a single buck. So that you might need to sell it for peanuts.

But instead if you bought a blog with decent traffic which is UNDER MONETIZED and sell it after 6 months then obviously it may have higher value. Provided that you should have to work hard on creating more quality content and building backlinks and all.

Most of the blogs are under monetized. So hunt it, make an offer and buy it or just start from scratch.

  34. February 12, 2013 at 8:21 am #

Whether you decide to build or buy a blog, you can still fell the fulfillment that either choice can give you. I mean, that’s what I think. You just have to work hard for your blog in order for it to succeed.

    • February 12, 2013 at 3:52 pm #

You also have to speed it up in the direction you want when you buy another blog, that’s good point.

      Thanks for droppin’ in, Veronica.

    • February 12, 2013 at 5:59 pm #

      Yes Veronica,
If you bought a blog your job is not over. There are still a lot of work remaining. I am still on that work by writing this guest post and promoting my blog here :)

  35. February 11, 2013 at 9:12 pm #

Hi everyone. Ehsan asked me to share my views on the issue. If you are in doubt regarding the value of a website, I suggest you take a look at this post I wrote a while ago:

There are more aspects to the decision of buying vs. starting a blog/website though. For one thing starting one has a much smaller financial risk involved. If you purchase one but doesn’t have enough experience to manage it you might end up losing money and time.

As other people recommend above, I believe that your first site should be started from scratch, as this will let you learn the ropes. Once you have some experience you might consider a purchase to speed up things in the direction you want.

    • February 12, 2013 at 3:49 pm #

Welcome Daniel, excited see ya here.

Yeah, starting a new blog is risk free while buying one needs you to be experienced in order to gain profits.

Everyone’s first blog should be started from scratch, because that helps you learn new experiences which helps in long run.

Thanks for adding knowledge Daniel, I truly appreciate it. Let’s see what Shahzad and Sapna has to say.

    • February 12, 2013 at 5:57 pm #

Thanks for your time Daniel and it is really great to see you here. Your articles are actually a big encouragement for me to buy my current blog.

    • February 12, 2013 at 6:10 pm #

      HI Ehsan

Firstly I would like to thank you for caring too much about your readers.

Daniel – Nice to see on Ehsan’s post, Infact I WAS a regular commentator on your posts from the time I started blogging.

Anyways let’s move on to core issue, I read your post and it was very descriptive and you have almost covered about everything brilliantly.

For a year old blog as you have said 24 X total monthly earning + rss subscribers + organic traffic etc, NOW how did this magic number of 24 or for that matter 16(for less than 6) is derived?

How much $’s are added for rss subsribers(say a blog has 500 subscribers) and for organic traffic and for others as well?

What type of documentation we should ask for technical and legal?

How the deal is finally closed, how is the money and documents transfer takes place at the same time?

I’m looking for the checklist so to say.

Thanks in advance for the same.

      • February 13, 2013 at 2:45 pm #

You are again behind magic numbers! Believe me, it depends upon bargaining and the reputation of the blog. If your blog has high reputation I can go for 24 times of monthly income. If it is less reputed I’ll never pay such big money.

The number we say here (24 times) is JUST to have an idea of how much you can get by selling it. You should never stick with it.

        Q1. ” 24 X total monthly earning + rss subscribers + organic traffic…..”

Forget any kind of equation here. If you have 500 rss subscribers but if no one come back to read your blog, then what is the use of it??
If you have only 100 subscribers who care about your latest post, then it matters not that of above 500.

Q2. “What type of documentation we should ask for technical and legal?”

It is suggested to have a contract of sale everytime while selling.

However, this contract will NOT be good enough for legal purpose. But it is to helps both buyer and seller know what they’re getting—and what their obligations are, just that.

For e.g imagine that you are an Indian and you are about to buy a blog worth $500/- from an Australian. Even if you have legal documents it is harder to proceed with it because both of them are staying at different places with different time zone with different laws.

Understand that even if someone is selling a blog on Flippa, Flippa could not take any legal action when someone do any fraudulent activity during the ownership transaction or money transferring other than deleting the fraud accounts from their site. Even Flippa is really helpless in such cases. That is why it is recommended to have a deal with a person you have some kind of trust. That is why it is suggested to use for the sale.

Q3. “How the deal is finally closed, how is the money and documents transfer takes place at the same time?”

Brilliant question, I can say that. While selling my first blog I also had such question in my mind. Exact answer would be out of the scope of this article because I’ve to say a lot of thing on this topic. In fact, I’ve sent a guest post to discussing about post-website sales procedure like ownership and money transaction. If I’ve not sent it to Harsh of ShoutMeLoud I would have sent it to Ehsan to publish the article on this blog. But it is late, sorry :(

I would rather recommend you to wait for some more days. On 21st Feb my article will publish on ProBlogger and I swear YOU WILL LOVE IT. It covers almost most of your questions. Also, I didn’t get a reply from Harsh yet. It is completely about money and documents transfer while selling a blog. Once it got publish I’ll let you know

Q4. “I’m looking for the checklist so to say”
My upcoming ebook about Buying and Selling Websites will cover all these checklist but again you got to wait :(

Let me know if yo have any more questions. Always happy to help :)

  36. February 11, 2013 at 5:01 pm #

Starting from scratch is always a good idea as you will always get some new experiences (good or bad, it doesn’t matter) that will help you in the long race.

    Good Post.

    • February 11, 2013 at 5:46 pm #

Good point Anurag, starting from scratch will help to learn the skills. The post is for those who ever wanted on making a decision on buying and starting a blog.

      Thanks for the heads up.

  37. February 11, 2013 at 2:11 pm #

    Hey Ehsan Ullah !
Very interesting post. and I would like to post my own blog, because I have to take care of my readers. I have to write according to their need, taste and requirements.

  38. February 11, 2013 at 11:54 am #

Hi Ehsan, buying a blog is definitely a great way to invest in but the important is to see how much water we have in the pocket in order to buy it and rock it. But starting a blog is more interesting and you listed a very important thing of buying a blog.

    Thank You – Ferb

    • February 11, 2013 at 6:12 pm #

I would suggest to every blogger never to hesitate to invest money on your blog (If you can afford), because It is must and when you’ll invest, you’ll earn.

Investing in buying a blog can be really profitable If you’re experienced in it.

    • February 12, 2013 at 5:54 pm #

      Hi Ferb,
Nice to see you here. And one thing… it was not Ehsan, it was written by me …Hehe

      • February 14, 2013 at 10:40 am #

Hi Shahzad, thanks for writing this great article and love to see your post here.

        Thanks – Ferb

  39. February 11, 2013 at 6:17 am #

    Good topic to write about.
According to me if you have enough knowledge about blogging and seo then buying a blog and flipping it for profit is a good way to make quick bucks. But it will be like investing in a business venture so you need to be cautious before choosing a blog and investing in it.

    • February 11, 2013 at 5:15 pm #

Good point Tarun, Being knowledgeable about buying and selling blogs and websites online, blogging and SEO is needed in order to buy a blog to work on.

      Appreciate you stopping by.

    • February 12, 2013 at 5:53 pm #

It is not about making quick bucks Tarun, I can say that. The blog we bought still need a lot of hard work to make it on our way.
As said, blog is a business and business need investment :)

      Thanks for stopping by Tarun

  40. February 10, 2013 at 11:29 pm #

As a novice blogger I would say from the little experience I have, its best to start from the beginning and learn as much as you can. You could then decide on buying a taking bigger risk, but, hopefully a bigger reward

    • February 11, 2013 at 5:09 pm #

Right Richard, for newcomers starting from scratch is good option because they’ll have to learn it first.

      Thanks for dropping in,

    • February 12, 2013 at 5:50 pm #

I can say that Ehsan has a lot of readers who love to start again. As said I feel buying an easier task.

      Thanks for your comment Richard

  41. February 10, 2013 at 10:09 pm #

Interesting idea to buy a blog. I’m about to start one from scratch, so I guess I’ll have to go through all those painful steps you mentioned! ;-)

  42. February 10, 2013 at 7:40 pm #

    Hi Shahzad,

Good to see your post here. I agree with your points; if you have good knowledge and skills then you should buy an old blog. Starting a new blog is really a headache and needs lot of time hard work.

Thanks for sharing your mind with us.

    Bashir A.

    • February 11, 2013 at 5:03 pm #

Good to see ya here Bashir, Buying an old blog is easy to go, but for NEWBIES It’s really hard to find a good blog, buy it and work on it – while starting new one will be easy because that’s where they’ll work on themselves from beginning. Agree?

      • February 12, 2013 at 6:01 pm #

Thanks for reply to my comment. Again I must say Newbie bloggers should start a new blog, if they want to buy an old blog they should contact to some experienced bloggers like Shehzad.

        • February 15, 2013 at 8:12 pm #

Everyone’s first blog should be started from scratch, Bashir. And after becoming experienced, buying would be a good idea.

    • February 12, 2013 at 5:46 pm #

Really glad to know you like the post.

      Thanks for the appreciation :)

      • February 12, 2013 at 6:03 pm #

You’re most welcome Shahzad. I want to sell my old domain would you please help me?

I am really glad for that! Send me details in private. I can assist you in this regard!!

  43. February 10, 2013 at 1:32 pm #

I’ve been thinking of starting a new blog on different niche as a venture. Your tips here is great to keep in mind on what should I do. I think every niche have their own characteristic of problems, yet the most important one is to start and to learn. It’s never ending process.

    • February 11, 2013 at 6:20 pm #

      Ohh great Okto, what niche?

      • February 12, 2013 at 7:48 am #

Anything outside blogging tips my friend :). Still figure it out for sure

        • February 12, 2013 at 3:28 pm #

Good for ya, but is it on a topic you love and experienced?

          Keep me updated :)

    • February 13, 2013 at 9:52 am #

Keep me also updated about your new blog. If I’ve found anyone to start a blog as venture I would not have bought my new blog.

  44. February 10, 2013 at 9:43 am #

If one has the money then buying a blog is a good decision. But how can a newbie be expected to have all the buying skills they need. Alexa’s a farce and there are many link building techniques

    • February 10, 2013 at 4:47 pm #

Nice to see ya again George. The learning process is must and as mentioned in the post that If you never had a blog before and don’t have experience in it, than starting is the way to go.

      Thanks for your comment.

  45. February 10, 2013 at 7:17 am #

It is riskier to buy an old blog. Many sellers handle it over to you with fake ranking. i.e. they build paid and temporary links to it, rank it well and sell it to you. Once you buy it, the paid links are removed and your blog loses its ranking at all. Then it becomes very hard to rank it again. So starting a new blog in PROPERLY is much better than buying an old one.

    • February 10, 2013 at 4:33 pm #

Have you ever experienced it Rehmat? I think you’re right because I’ve seen bloggers buying links from irrelevant websites to get ranking, but the number of those type websites and blogs are limited after the animal updates from Google.

Let’s see what Shahzad has to say regarding this.

      • February 10, 2013 at 5:38 pm #

No Ehsan, I haven’t experienced it luckily. I hear sad stories of other people in SEO forums where I regularly use to visit.

        • February 10, 2013 at 5:52 pm #

Ohh nice to know! Can you point some of the useful forums name that you visit daily to share and learn?

          • February 11, 2013 at 7:18 am #

I frequently visit WarriorForum ( and v7n ( and have learned a lot from there. I really value the community in these forums. I spend almost my all time there. These two forums are really helpful to learn modern SEO. When you regularly visit these forums, then you keep knowing that how search engines are behaving at the moment. So you can optimize your blog well. I also visit BlackHatWorld ( but occasionally.

          • February 11, 2013 at 5:20 pm #

I’m a big fan of WarriorForum too Rehmat – DigitalPoint forums are also the best place for bloggers and marketers to learn, have you heard of it before?

            Thanks for sharing.

          • February 11, 2013 at 5:41 pm #

Yeah, I’ve signed-up for DigitalPoint two months before but I don’t visit it much and go there once or twice a month, so I don’t have any concept about the community of this forum. If you have found it useful and supporting, then I’ll also start going there :)

          • February 11, 2013 at 6:17 pm #

Yup, I suggest you be an active member there. It’s really a great place where blogging and marketing elites hangs out (Newbies as well).

          • February 11, 2013 at 6:31 pm #

Okay sure, and thank you for the suggestion.

    • February 12, 2013 at 5:44 pm #

That things you got to talk with each other before the sale. That is why it is recommended to write a contract of sale :)

      • Rehmat
        February 12, 2013 at 5:57 pm #

Nice article Shahzad. But online marketing is complicated, specially when it comes to sell and buy blogs and websites. Flippa is a good platform for selling and buying websites but still a contract is just a formality as most sellers keep their real identity private. I think so. More importantly it is buyer’s luck :) It is my personal opinion :P . It is also a fact that I haven’t sold or bought any blog, have heard stories from fellows only. Your thoughts are much more valuable than that of mine as you have EXPERIENCE

        • February 15, 2013 at 8:09 pm #

Kinda agree with you Rehmat, webmasters never share their secrets and identities.

  46. February 10, 2013 at 6:46 am #

Hi, I liked the idea of buying and merging a blog with a site. Specially, businesses must take note of this point and immediately jump into Flippa!

Many businesses have websites but they are nothing more than SHOW PIECES. Buying a blog related to the business niche and merging it with their website would certainly benefit from different angles.

As far as a newbie blogger is concerned, I think starting from scratch is better and it should not be a headache. If it is a headache, then he/she must have the courage and confidence to tackle it.

But buying and selling blogs/websites is a lucrative option. It’s a business of buying a profitable business for either continuing with it or sell it for more profit. This is an age old concept that has been there since the civilization of human started……only the type and form has changed!

    Thanks for the post!

    • February 10, 2013 at 8:40 am #

You have a great view Mukesh. I appreciate it!!

Have a plan to merge related sites to my current site. But not in near future. Have no money now for this.

      Thanks again for your comment

    • February 10, 2013 at 3:36 pm #

Haha, very true Mukesh. Buying something and selling it for more profit is an old concept, buy the type of form has changed.

It’s always great to have you here.

      Glad you liked the post.

  47. February 10, 2013 at 6:12 am #

To build a new blog is better than buying an old blog, sometimes old blogs turn out to be Gold mines but to have a satisfaction of success it could be starting a new blog. Nice Article Eshan

      Thanks for droppin’ in, Vijesh.

I appreciate your thoughts, keep on commenting.

  48. February 10, 2013 at 4:50 am #

    HI Shahzad,

    Great information shared!

I really liked your idea of buying a reputed blog and nothing better than getting that at throw away price we all wish for. Many of us wants to jump a few steps in order to reach the pole position quickly but the deadly fear is falling flat on face if one step goes wrong in between.

coming on to post, you have really simplified the process but I would really want to know how the pricing model is worked upon, what are the input parameters, is everything based on pageviews and the earnings over and the above the premium seller is asking for. How is the price derived for say 100 pageviews per day to 3000 pageviews per day.Is there any formula which can be worked upon?

Thanks Ehsan for bringing in Shazad, Warren Buffet of blogosphere in making, if I may say so.

    • February 10, 2013 at 8:35 am #

      Hi Sapna,
Thanks for stopping by and your kind words. Just now I got an email offer from a guy to buy and I told a BIG NO because I have long term plans on that blog.

About your comment. The site was under optimized. Before I acquired it the old owner was not making a single buck from the site.

And to be honest, there was no such parameter. At first when I saw the stats I have a price in my mind to pay for that blog. As said, the site was not making any money so there were no such equation and it was bought outside. Old owner told me a price. I bought it for almost 1/3rd of what he asked.

Thanks very much for an excellent comment. You can learn about my future strategies with that blog here at my intro post.

      • February 10, 2013 at 8:36 am #

I mean I bought it from outside Flippa

    • February 10, 2013 at 3:24 pm #

I’m going to plugin Daniel Scocco here and see his thoughts because he’s my favorite and has experience in buying selling blogs and websites. I know we’re missing something here.

I Think starting a new blog is a good idea for new bloggers and when you will get some knowledge about blogging.Than we should try to purchase a blog. Also Ehsan bro, you have just described all the things just excellent.

    • February 10, 2013 at 3:07 pm #

You’re right Ravi, buying and selling blogs is a big online business that is making big money to some people.

      Thanks for dropping in.

    Hi Shahzad,
Welcome on board with your first guest post and as Ehsan said, I’ve tweeted it.
But to me, the idea of buying a blog as a newbie blogger is truly a bit cynical. And it’s obviously advisable to start from scratch when one knows nothing with regards to internet business.

    • February 10, 2013 at 2:17 am #

      Kudos Kabenlah for your thoughts!
      I totally agree with you.

    • February 10, 2013 at 3:02 pm #

Nice to see ya here Kabelan, thanks for tweeting the post man.

      Hope to see ya back!

  51. February 9, 2013 at 3:56 pm #

Well, nice topic to talk on. Even when I thought of planning to start blogging, my first plan was to buy a blog which is reputed than starting a new blog and working on it from first.

Yes i did. I bought a blog or you can name it as website as it was a Press Release website which I don’t even know what is Press Release website and how to use it.

I didn’t even know what to do or those set-up from one hosting to another. Then by some means got it done and started. Now then I came to know that Press Release website is not about writing articles and it meant to have lots of connections with SEO company and etc. It was a utter failure for me where only my money went off.

Then thought of starting my own blog, even I had a problem on what to start either tech or blogging related and also was afraid as there were many blogs on it and for me competition would be really high.

Then I had a thought of starting a blog for future released products that too for each and every product to have a dedicated blog so that I would be a authority over it soon. So then I started this Samsung Galaxy S 4 blog and learn everything from basic on how to start, what to do and how to do. Now its going fine and I can say myself that I learnt blogging all about.

    • February 9, 2013 at 4:48 pm #

Its really great to read your story Shathyan. If I could tell my view, I think your niche is too narrowed. However, you should continue blogging with it and as you said learning basics is really important.

      Thanks for sharing your story!!

    • February 9, 2013 at 6:07 pm #

      Excited see ya here Shatyan,

You bought a blog without any knowledge about blogging and without being much passionate about the selected topic, no that’s where the post is gonna help people. Planning about blog’s future and thinking of how you’ll be able to work on it before buying is must.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, I hope you’ve learned from your mistake now.

  52. February 9, 2013 at 8:32 am #

Yeah! it’s great to buy a blog if you have the knowledge and skills already, but it is way more expensive then starting a new one. And bloggers in India don’t have that much resources.

    • February 9, 2013 at 9:38 am #

You make me laugh Ritish! Internet is everywhere so the resources too.

Buying or selling blog is not rocket science. Follow these 3 steps.

      1. Discover the site you would like to buy on your preferred niche.
      2. Analyze the performance of the site.
      3. Make an offer, bargain and buy it. That’s it!!

Let me know if you have any questions

      • February 9, 2013 at 1:41 pm #

Why does it make you laugh Shahzad, by resources I mean the money.
People in india don’t even like to spend a penny on the internet, they always try to find alternatives like hacks and all that. Just that!

        • February 9, 2013 at 2:16 pm #

Haha, we have quite same problem here in Afghanistan, Ritish. Because there’s not a buy one get one FREE system in blogging ;)

        • February 9, 2013 at 4:50 pm #

I thought you mean information not money.
          My mistake ;)

  53. February 9, 2013 at 8:17 am #

    Hello Ehsan and Shahzad.

I prefer to start a blog instead of buying a blog, the reason being quite expensive to buy a blog. And if you start it will give you a sense of happiness.

Hmm… Glad to know your thoughts

But for me starting is an head ache!

Having my blog created by me helps me lot in understanding end to end from technology to blogging stuff. As you have suggested, newbie should always learn from scratch that helps to understand the basics and learn more advanced techniques. If anybody buying a blog without any knowledge they have to depend on others for everything. Once we get good knowledge, buying a blog and making a necessary changes as per our requirement will be easier and shahzad on buying a new blog and guest post in guideandnews.

      Hi lokesh.

I am also a beginner and I would follow the advice above, that maybe I would not buy a blog, I prefer to start from scratch.

Starting from scratch, it will add to our knowledge about starting a new blog. Other than that I’d rather save money than having to use it to buy a blog.
