Comment Strategy: An Easy Guide to Redirecting First Time Commentators To a Thank You Page

redirecting to a thank you page

One of the best strategy to develop your relationship with the first time visitors and make them a loyal reader of your blog is to redirect them to a custom “thank you” page when they leave a comment on your blog.

I’ve been redirecting my first time commentators to a custom “Thank you” page from quite sometime, but now the page I’m redirecting my comments is the community page because this is one of the best page on my blog which explains everything about what I do and what people can expect from my blog.

This is one of the most common question I get asked from people that how to redirect the first time commentator to another fancy “thank you” page.

So, In this post I’m going to show you how to do it…

…But, first I would like to tell you that what should you put on your thank you page:

What you should put on your thank you page is extremely important because this is one of the best page of your blog where you can add the best thing about your blog and let them know about your blog more closely.

It does have to have some kind of rhyme and reason. Below are some of the things you can consider adding to that page.

  • A personal thank you message:

A personal thank you message has a big impact on people If has some attention grabby lines and a little bit of humor. Checkout the text below that I used to write on my “thank you” page as a personal message as an example for you.

I just wanted to take a moment to personally thank you for taking the time to leave a comment here. I really appreciate it and it means a lot to me.

My primary goal with this blog is to help you with every step of blogging, SEO and social media etc. Not only that, I also strive to build a community to start a conversation about such topic.

When you express your thoughts by commenting here, it opens up the channels of communication between us and also creates a sense of community.

Whenever you support me by leaving a comment here, it brings me one step closer to my goal. Isn’t what Blogging is all about?

Liked my personal message above? I hope It also gave an idea to create yours.

So, creating a personal thank you page and redirecting the first time commentators to that page will give people a chance to get to know more about you and is an effective way to make them love your blog even more.

  • Your email list signup:

If someone left a comment on your blog, It means he/she is already interested in reading what you write on your blog.

This comment redirect idea is a way to make him/her a loyal reader and encourage them to sign up to your list.

Also give them a few reasons why they should join your list and get updates from you by writing something about what they can expect from you in their email.

  • Your achievements or popular posts:

If you like to show the commentators some kind of your achievements and some of the most popular posts that you’ve written on your blog to let them know that they might like to check them out, you can include them on your “thank you” page.

Now If you check the page where I’m redirecting my first time commentators, you’ll see that I’ve added all three of the things there from above. There’s a personal message, there’s an email optin form with some catchy lines, and I’ve also added some of the most popular posts of my blog there to let my visitors know that what type of stuff they can expect here.

So how to redirect first time commentators to another page?

Okay, now you know the importance of redirecting your comments to a “thank you” page.

So, what you should do to get your first time commentators to redirect to thank you or any other page? It’s pretty easy. Follow the simple steps below.

1. Create a thank you page:

First of all you have a create a page where you want to redirect the first comments.

Go you your WordPress dashboard, hit PAGES>Add New and design your page.

Make sure your page include all of the elements or even any one of the element from the above, but make sure you include an email sign up form to let them join your mailing list.

2. Install a comment redirect plugin:

I’ve used a lot of comment redirect plugins, but one of the best I’ve ever found is Comment Redirect by Yoast (I actually love all of the plugins from Yoast).

Head over to your PLUGINS>Add new and then search “Comment redirect by Yoast”. Install it when It comes up.

3. Put the link to your page in plugin’s setting:

Okay have you installed and activated the plugin, Now It might be appearing in the plugin’s sidebar. Click on that and put the link to your thank you page in it.

Now If you’ve done all of the steps, then all of your first time commentators will be redirected to that page.

If you haven’t left a comment on The Bloggers Community before, go ahead leave a comment below and you’ll be redirected to community page of my blog. Also let me know what you think of that page?

Adding a thank you page was on my “things to do” list for the week in terms of my blog. I’m glad I was able to find your post about it, and am equally happy that this can be done through what seems to be a pretty user friendly plugin. Thanks for the suggestion, I really think it will help me better connect with me readers.

    • February 5, 2013 at 1:57 pm #

I’m too glad you found my post in time and found it useful Dickie.

Didn’t you know about that plugin before?

      • February 5, 2013 at 2:33 pm #

I assumed there was a plugin for it, but didn’t specifically know about Comment Redirect. I’m not much of a trial and error guy so I don’t just search plugins and install them to try them out; rather I like to check out what some of the bigger bloggers are doing because the plugins they recommend usually come with helpful tips, like in the case of your post. Do you keep track of your web form conversions? If so, how well does the form on your redirect page perform versus others on your site?

        • February 5, 2013 at 3:13 pm #

I actually love all of the plugin’s from Yoast, have you heard of WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin?

Comment redirect by Yoast is nice plugin that only let’s you redirect your comments to another page, but CommentLuv Premium is 8 in one plugins that also has a feature of redirecting your commentators to another page which is why I love Commentluv premium plugin.

The form on the community page converts more than others because the content there encourages people to subscribe. I don’t keep the track by the way.

          • February 5, 2013 at 6:01 pm #

Ha! I didn’t know CommentLuv allows that. I actually had that plugin installed on my blog, but it didn’t attract the commenting attention I thought it would (as it’s more of a blogger-type plugin, rather than the wrestling weight training niche I’m in). Do you have posts on the ins and outs of both CommentLuv and WordPress SEO by Yoast?

          • February 5, 2013 at 6:53 pm #

CommentLuv is a useful plugin for every niche, however not sure of wrestling weight niche tough. It has that feature in It’s premium version, not in free one. I haven’t written reviews of those plugins, but the one here by Ana Hoffman is must read review of CommentLuv premium.

    Hi Ehsan,

What an awesome idea! Just the think I need to add to my site. I’ll be bookmarking this page to be sure I get my Thank you page correct. Should I use the same ‘theme’ or is it okay to put another picture in it’s place? If it is okay to change picture theme, is this easy to do?

    Great post! Sally

    • February 4, 2013 at 7:09 pm #

Excited to see ya after while Sally,

You can use the same theme like I’m doing here, but be sure to make it stand out.

    Hi Ehsan,

Nice idea to send people to a Comment Thank You page. Are you getting any complaints from this? What do you use to track how effective this page is for reducing your bounce rate and getting return blog traffic?

Keep me posted on your progress with this strategy – it sounds like a good one for you.

    • February 3, 2013 at 7:13 pm #

Nice to see ya here Ileane,

I haven’t got any complaints of redirecting my comments to the community page, have you?
That page describes everything about my blog, and has all information so redirecting people to that page is beneficial for me. It also also has an optin form and is really effective for me increasing the number of email subscribers everyday, but no idea of the bounce rate.

I think It depends on how effective the Thank you page is, have you ever used this strategy Ileane?

This was an amazing article and thanks for sharing about the Yoast Plugin :)

    • January 27, 2013 at 2:03 pm #

Your welcome Manual, are you using the plugin?

  37. January 27, 2013 at 7:34 am #

Indeed a personal “Thank you” message does put impact on people/readers and it is as showing care to the readers/commenters for their time to leave a comment. So, redirecting a first time commenters to a “Thanks You” page is good strategy top build up a good connection.Well, commenting does open channels of communication between blog readers and blog owners and for peoples too. Your post it easy to follow to setup a “Thank You” page and Yoast comment redirect seems to be an awesome plugin (I’ll try it). Thanks Ehsan for this wonderful post and tweeted it :)

I’ve read it somewhere but can’t remember. Just Google it ones!

  39. January 26, 2013 at 7:35 pm #

A redirect for first time users is a great way to get more Facebook fans, build subscribers, or do just about anything with. If they liked your post, its a sure thing that they will follow you elsewhere.

    • January 27, 2013 at 6:38 am #

    Informative indeed Ehsan!

I wish I had read your post a few months back when I did most of what you mentioned, so that I wouldn’t have to look up how to go about it elsewhere. :) The reply me plugin of CommentLuv helps me there, though would check out Yoast too now.

Nevertheless, there’s lot more still to be done, which I would be soon getting down to once I tweak up a few things on my revamped blog. I liked your idea about joining the community, something that I intend building soon at my blog along with introducing a lot many things shortly.

Thanks so much for sharing these tips with us. :)

It’s never too late to learn new skills Harleena, Sometimes even a newbie can teach life lessons to experienced ones in any niche.

I’ve disabled the Replyme plugin of CommentLuv because I’m using different plugins to do for me what that plugin can do, but I’ll consider using a single plugin now. Actually, I didn’t know that ReplyMe plugin lets us to redirect the commentators to another page, thanks for letting me know.

Building a community on a blog is must in any niche, and as you already have a huge fans, I think the growth of your community will be rapid If you start today.

Thanks for your comment Harleena, hope to see ya back!

  46. January 26, 2013 at 2:27 pm #

    Hey Ehsan,

Some good ideas came out as a result of this post. I liked the comment of Raplus and his idea of inserting Facebook like box and twitter follow button.

Trying to build relationship with your readers from the Day1 is very important and redirecting commenters to a thank you page is a great idea!

    Thanks for the post!

    • January 27, 2013 at 6:21 am #

Glad you found some new ideas from this post Mukesh,

As I said in reply to Raplus’s comment If you’re a social person than consider adding Facebook like box and Twitter follow button, but adding a email sign up form will get you subscribers.

Thanks for your comment man, I appreciate it.

    Hi Ehsan.

Your article is very creative and very unique, thanks for sharing.

True, in order to strengthen the relationship between the reader and the writer needed a special page for “Thank You” on the blog.

I want to do for my blog, but I was a blogspot platform users.

    • January 27, 2013 at 4:49 am #

Thanks Darmawan, glad you found this post to be a creative one.

I guess there’s also a way to do it on Blogspot blog.

    Good Tutorial Ehsan,
Just wanted to tell you something that whenever I comment on your blog there is an e-mail send to me every time and it is very annoying.

    Thanks for the tutorial. Cheers.

    • January 27, 2013 at 4:19 am #

I was thinking of same Anurag, I’ll limit the email to only first time commentators now :)

Thanks for reminding me, Do you use a plugin to send thank you emails to your commentators?

      • February 5, 2013 at 5:26 am #

Sorry for the late reply Ehsan (I know you were not waiting for it though),
I haven’t started it yet but will start it in the coming months.

  49. January 26, 2013 at 10:25 am #

    Nice Guidelines Ehsaan.

    • January 27, 2013 at 4:18 am #

Thanks Rudrakhs, too short comment? :O Is it your new strategy?

      • January 27, 2013 at 7:47 am #

Ha ha ha na na that’s definitely not my strategy. :-)

        • January 27, 2013 at 2:06 pm #

Lol, I’ve been noticing that in few of my recent posts, I’ve been receiving short comments from ya! ;)

  50. January 26, 2013 at 8:28 am #

Ehsan, When i started my blogging career and started commenting in other blogs, your’ s was the first blog to receive Thank you mail after commenting. Felt happy about that and may be from that day i followed your blog regularly. The Mail Thank you response is the powerful method to attract loyal readers. Thanks for sharing the steps and surely will follow the steps above.

And other day you said you use the photographs taken by you. I think the one above is the photography of yours, can you please share which is the place in the above picture.

    • January 27, 2013 at 4:17 am #

Thank you Lokesh, I always appreciate your comments here.

I think sending a thank you email to commentators is good, but sending it every time someone leaves a comment on your blog will be annoying, I’m also going to limit it.

Most of the time I design my own photos for my posts and I take my own, but this one has taken from Flickr’s Creative Commons as “You’re being redirected” ;)

      Thanks for your comment.

  51. January 26, 2013 at 7:39 am #

    Hi ehsan,

I just started blogging 1 month back and everyday i am learning new blogging tips from bloggers like you.

This post is awesome and i will definitely install this thank you plugin on my blog.

Nice to know you’re learning from me Rupali.

Thanks for your comment and hope to see ya back around in future.

    HI Ehsan

These are the real insights which you have shared today. The way you have explained it considering the techie part as well speaks volume of your skills.

    Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for the nice words Sapna, Glad you liked it.

      I appreciate your comment.

  53. January 26, 2013 at 4:25 am #

When it comes about commenting I always follow your rules and guidelines Ehsan… You are the King of commenting ;)

I will think about the redirection to my ebook page. Thanks for the suggestion.

It great to see the image you’ve published at the top. Such image is quite unusual here.

    Thanks for the post!

    • January 26, 2013 at 4:45 am #

      Hey Shahzad,

I agree with you because Ehsan is the king of commenting. ;-)

      Hey Ehsan,

I am also going to create a thank you page. I think that adding a Facebook fan page like box and adding a Twitter follow button to the thank you page are also a good thing because someone comments on our blog mean they love our blog,

      • January 26, 2013 at 3:46 pm #

Wow Raplus, loved your comment ;)

Yup, If you’re too social and love to connect with others on social media websites, than It’s good idea.

I’m curious to see what you’re gonna do on your thank you page.

    • January 26, 2013 at 3:44 pm #

      Hey thanks Shahzad, I’m honored!

Writing about your product or eBook on your Thank you page is also a good idea, but don’t directly force your readers to download your eBook, instead provide them with some insights about your blog and your eBook and try to encourage them to get your eBook.

Glad you liked the image, have you also tried using images like this?
