One of The Best Strategy To Grow Your Blog

A couple of days ago after reading my post on “Is Your Blog on the Right Track“, one of my friend emailed me asking for the best strategy to grow a blog.

In the email he explained that his blog is older than mine and he was doing almost every basic things to take his blog to the next level that I’ve been doing on my blog like guest posting, commenting on other blogs and producing quality content etc, but still his blog wasn’t on the right track.

So, he wanted to know about the mistakes he has been making and asked me about the best strategy to grow a blog that I’m following.

After spending few minutes on his blog, I was actually shocked that he was more experienced blogger than me and his blog was better than mine in design and content.

So, what was the problem?

I replied that the reason his blog wasn’t on the right track is that he was looking on the situation incorrectly.

There are millions of blogs and bloggers out there, plenty of those bloggers are faster and smarter than us, but the success in blogging has nothing to do with being faster, smarter or being cheaper.

I told him that the best strategy to grow your blog is to make as many friends as possible that are interested in what you do and build a community around yourself.

No matter what niche you’re in, you’re gonna need some friends to get you up there. I have already described the importance of treating your blog like a social networking blog and why it is useful for bloggers.

Building a relationship with other bloggers and making friends is must in blogging. In fact, just few weeks ago I’ve launched my first ever eBook and one of my friend (Raaj Trambadia of My Blog is My Money) who we’ve knows each other for about few months now on Facebook designed a cover image of my eBook for free because of that built relationship. Thank you Raaj!

Plus when It comes to a paid project, I myself will prefer to do a business with someone I know rather than with a stranger.

So, make as many friends as possible and build a community of people on your blog like I’ve done here on my community page.

grow your blog by making friendsHow to make friends?

What I have found about blogging that has brought a little success for me is to be friendly with everyone, to be controversial, to make mistakes and to be just myself. And yea, one more thing to just have fun with the process.

All of this is what makes one interesting and will attract other people to you.

If you write on your blog as a whole person and make them feel that there’s actually a human being writing, rather than one dimensional business drone, people tend to be interested in you.

Try to know your readers and commentators, connect with them on Twitter and Facebook and build relationship with them.

Make people enjoy talking to you and respond to every comment on your blog and emails in somewhat chatty and personal way instead of going for the sale when It’s not obvious warranted.

This is one of the best strategy to grow your blog because your friends are the ones that will spread the work about your blog and will help you in generating traffic to your blog.

All you have to do is just unlearn some of the ingrained habits you’ve gotten used to, like a feeling that a blogger should be “professional” and shouldn’t hang out with others or that just producing content and sharing it everywhere is enough to take your blog to the next level.

It’s up to you now:

The web has magnified the ability to meet new folks in new ways and our interpersonal connections, but It hasn’t changed the fundamental nature of relationships, so If we like people, we want to connect with them and do more with them in different ways.

Now get out there and make some new friends today.

Good luck and post your comment below.

One tip for building relationships with other blog owners that I have found invaluable is to diversify slightly and look at related verticals.

For example, my blog is about granite work surfaces, but the chances of other granite worktop companies being interested in blogging about my posts is much lower than the chances of an interior design company who use granite doing so. Sometimes you have to think a little bit outside the box to get the best results.

hey i love your post. Its all true.. finding many friends and connection over the internet will help you promote your blog. Not just that, by connecting with other bloggers you can develop your writing skills as well as your confidence to write more. I agree with Danialde that no matter how nice your post are when you don’t have many friends and connection, your post will be a waste.

Relationship with others is the most essential part. :D

  23. December 29, 2012 at 3:12 pm #

    Totally agree on this.
I have to admit that my current blog clearly lacks community.
And I am 100% sure that it could be 2-3 times more popular if I spent more time and effort to build relationships.
Especially I feel this problem, because in the past I had another blog which did much better in this aspect. Back then I was doing a lot of e-mail work, networking through social profiles etc..

    • December 30, 2012 at 6:24 am #

A blog’s success always depends on It’s readership and loyal readers, not traffic or anything else. You have to encourage first time visitors to become a loyal fan of your blog.

Hey Marcel, welcome to my blog.

I have also seen such bloggers who have some kind of problem with communicating, but you don’t have to stop using the strategy to grow your blog because of those people.

Yeah, having some personality and being social is the most important thing. In business the bigger your network is the more successful; this applies to blogging too. I have met very good business partners on Google communities, Facebook, Twitter, ect. It does take time, but once you get your blog rolling the end result is you will just have to focus on keeping up with good content and expanding your reach even more.

Making many friends are sometimes not so easy for some people, but it will be good if we try it. Internet give us opportunity to make as many as friends as possible. By blogging we can build relationship with anyone from all over the world. It is fascinating…
Thank you Ehsan Ullah for your sharing good topic.

    • December 20, 2012 at 2:09 pm #

Why do you think It’s not so easy Heru? I think It’s really easy to make friends and build relationship with other bloggers.

I’m glad you liked it Heru.

      • December 20, 2012 at 2:33 pm #

I mean in real life there are introvert and extrovert persons. There are some kinds of people who naturally have difficulties in communication with others or akward to talk with others on the other hand there are some others who are easy going and relaxing to speak with others. But as a matter of fact we have to communicate and have good relationship with others because we are social creatures. We cannot live without other people. And in blogging it will be very easy even for introvert persons because they can communicate indirectly to others not face to face so they feel relaxing and brave to share their ideas.

        • December 20, 2012 at 2:50 pm #

Nice to see ya back Heru,

I agree with you on that. You might know that I always connect with other bloggers and that is what I love to do because I’m building a bloggers community, In my journey I’ve seen a lot of people who had difficulties in communicating with others, so you’re absolutely right on this.

          • December 20, 2012 at 3:07 pm #

Luckily there are blogs, facebook, twitter and other social network which help people to easily communicate with others without being ashamed or affraid of making any mistake in language practice. This is one of the advantages of internet, make it possible for us to communicate with others who we do not know well. It trains us to write better and to use language better. I like a person like you who always respect, give attention and have positive thinking. You’re great Ehsan…

          • December 20, 2012 at 4:02 pm #

Thanks so much Heru, you’re right that It’s easy to get connected with other bloggers and with like minded people.

            You’re awesome too Heru.

You are so right on the part of building relationship with your readers. I agree that nothing beats being approachable and answering their comments will make them feel special, belong, and valued. I, for one, would keep on reading your posts if I know that I am being valued as a reader. Nice one! Thanks for sharing to us, Ehsan.

  45. December 19, 2012 at 4:47 am #

    Hi Ehsan,

In my experienced, creativity to capture opportunity is the best strategy. It’s crowded niche remember? Thus many have done what you think best, you need to evolve every single days to lead the progress. If not, then you are just following other success.

I am not saying that’s bad idea, but be creative and don’t just follow. Combine everything you’ve got (experience, income, network, etc) to modify the best strategy to work for you.

When we talk about creativity, then the sky is limit.

    • December 19, 2012 at 2:13 pm #

You’re right Okto, but remember there’s still chance to make difference in this niche and that is what I have been trying to do.

I agree that being creative is must and I like what you said in combining everything you’ve got to modify the strategy and I think that is what some big names have been doing like Pat Flynn on Smart Passive Income right?

      Thanks for sharing your views.

This is a great concept. Not just blogging but also in every aspect of life where we need to accomplish something of significance, we need friends, we need people who can help us get there.

I firmly believe in the saying, “If you have always done everything all by yourself, you haven’t done much.”

This is so right. Having a handful of friends, building a community, having a platform – is the best way to grow on fast track and I see that you have grown a good community around you, Ehsan. It’s a pleasure to associate with you and add value to your community.

      Hi Gauraw,

Great to see ya back, I agree with you that in every aspect of life we need friends and supporters who can help us get something done and help us accomplish something.

      I love that quote :)

Thanks so much for adding a value to my community, I really appreciate your support Gauraw.

      Enjoy your week.

    Hi Ehsan,

I really liked your strategy, and I know you are very expert in it ;-)

Well, I am agree with you on this. Networking, and making friends is the very best way to gain a huge market in your dashboard. If you are good with your community, there are chances that you will also get good in return.

Just like you have mentioned above that you got your first e-book cover for free from Raaj.

    • December 18, 2012 at 5:57 pm #

      Hi Hamza,

It’s really great to hear it from you. Thanks ;)

That’s my own strategy and my own opinion, so everyone is free to agree or disagree with me and It’s nice to know you like it.

That is why I love my friends because they’ll help you get something done that you can’t do yourself. Isn’t it?

  48. December 18, 2012 at 5:11 pm #

Ok I’ve got it Rahul. Well, thanks for letting me know and I would like to say that in niches like movies and songs aren’t that crowded and relationship building isn’t necessary in that niche.

You’re doing great job on your blog and I would like to suggest you to change your logo and design a professional looking logo. Everything else is okay I think

          • December 20, 2012 at 5:03 am #

Thanks for suggestion @Ehsan. I will change my blog logo. :)

          • December 20, 2012 at 2:10 pm #

            Your welcome Rahul.

  49. December 18, 2012 at 2:23 pm #

    Hi Ehsan,
You’re making a very importnat point here. Just like in real life, we badly need support of other people in blogosphere. Not so long ago, I stumbled upon an interesting term – coopetition (cooperation + competition). This concept implies combination of moral support and competition. And that’s the best way for growing a blog. Thanks for your helpful tip and have a good week.

    • December 18, 2012 at 4:44 pm #

      Hi Julia,

You’ve raised interesting point here. In real life we also need support of other people to get something done, so as a newbie blogger connecting with other bloggers also helps in learning new things and getting things done.

Julia, feel free to share the link of the article you’ve read here.

  50. December 18, 2012 at 10:35 am #

Yes, making friends and contacts in blogging is good for our blog visitors. Getting our blog in a right direction is important. So nice strategy for growing a blog.

Glad you liked the post Prakash. Hope to see ya back.

  51. December 18, 2012 at 7:07 am #

To grow a website keeping eyes on SERP is the most important thing along with making friends. This is totally my own opinion. But I think it is also an another part of the main story.

    • December 18, 2012 at 8:44 am #

Both are important in blogging, but If you ignore making friends and building relationship than you can’t grow only with SERP!

Well, It’s my own opinion, so feel free to disagree! P)

      • December 19, 2012 at 6:22 pm #

Yea! I also agree with your strategy. But, I have meant that SERP is the another important fact to get more visitors. On the other hand, SERP visitors are important for targeting ads specially for Adsense.

        • December 19, 2012 at 7:07 pm #

Yes, they’re good but when Google rolls their algorithm updates and search engine traffic falls, then friends and community members help on those times.

          • December 21, 2012 at 6:13 am #

To be sustained from any change of the Google algorithm is building website with white hat method. Actually, “Honesty is the best policy”. :)

I am totally agree with your concept Mr. Ehsan Sir. One thing I wanna discuss with you that If i am doing SEO for any website. I done keyword research for that website in adwords. Then which kerword I have to choose for that website from the adword’s result list. Whether it is low competiton ,high competetion, low searches or high searches, Please guide me by replying to my comment. Thanks.

    • December 17, 2012 at 1:46 pm #

@Intership PHP, First of all I want you to please use your real name and use a gravatar image when commenting on other blogs.

Always try to choose a keyword which has low competition, but high monthly searches on Google.

Thank you Ehsan for the great post. The way you talk about the strategy is based on your own experiences and i can see that they are succeeding too. When you create relationships people become part of your list too…

    • December 17, 2012 at 1:42 pm #

Yes George, When he asked me the question on “what is the best strategy to grow your blog”, I spent a lot of time on thinking what’s my own strategy what I applied on my blog and thought to share what I’ve been doing here.

Thanks for the heads up George.

Harneet Bhalla is my close friend and his eBook on making $600 from a single blog post is worth reading for every blogger, that is the only reason I shared it. Remember, It is my promise with my subscribers that I’ll only share anything that can help them directly with their blog and which adds value.

  59. December 17, 2012 at 7:03 am #

    I agree with this post 100%. :-)

Specially I think that this post will be helpful for Internet Marketing inches ( Blogging, SEO,Making Money) blog owners.

But it doesn’t mean that other bloggers don’t want to make friends :-D .

    • December 17, 2012 at 1:39 pm #

The trick is helpful not only for internet marketing niches, but It can be useful for every niche because no matter what niche you’re in, there are absolutely people interested in what you do and you can connect with them and introduce your blog to them. Don’t you think Raplus?

  60. December 17, 2012 at 7:00 am #

I agree with you Ehsan, connections, lots of connections are the true way to success in blogging.

Moreover, having nice connection with network makes you easier to update and current on your niche.

    • December 17, 2012 at 1:37 pm #

Thanks Suresh, connecting with lots of people in your niche is the key to success in blogging and this is what all top names in the industry have been doing from long time.

It also helps in increasing your knowledge in specific niche and learn more and more from others. Isn’t it?

      Thanks for stopping by Suresh.

      • December 18, 2012 at 12:15 am #

That’s absolutely true. I also found that most of the products I sold as an affiliate through my blog are from the very connections. You can’t expect the first time readers of your blog will buy the recommended products immediately.

        After all it is relationship.

        • December 18, 2012 at 8:39 am #

          Indeed true!

I bet no one will buy anything from you If they don’t know you unless those who don’t know what affiliate marketing is. Relationship based marketing has always been successful.

Thanks for the heads up Suresh :)

  61. December 17, 2012 at 6:49 am #

    Couldn’t agree more Ehsan!

I totally agree with your points, and in-fact I’ve also seen that building relationships is what really works. There is nothing else that does wonders to your blog other than reaching to and connecting with people. Yes, to a certain extent SEO and other things do help, but they all take a back seat when Google puts up it’s updates. And in such times it’s your friends, contacts, readers, and fans who live up to it – isn’t it?

Some people are of the view that just by writing posts and sharing them on various platforms will do the trick, but that’s actually just a tip of the iceberg and a lot remains undone if you don’t make those connections. I guess the key lies in just being your true self and going out to mingle with people.

Thanks for sharing and letting us know about this best way to grow your blog. :)

    • December 17, 2012 at 1:33 pm #

      Thanks Harleena,

I must say that you’re in top at relationship based marketing from what I can see you connecting with other bloggers and leaving great comments. You’re absolutely right that It’s friends and loyal readers who help us when Google puts up It’s algorithm update and all SEO traffic falls.

Yes and they must unlearn that habit and try to make connections too and work on getting loyal readers rather than working to get one time visitor.

Glad you liked the post Harleena.

      Thanks for the awesome comment.

  62. December 17, 2012 at 6:02 am #

    Hi Ehsan,
Well I do think that interacting with others by replying to their comments and social media which helps a blog to grow faster. I like the points that you have shared. Thanks for the share!!

    Hi Ehsan,
Thanks for the real great information. Making friends on blogosphere is what I’ve missed in my 4 years of blogging life. If I’ve taken this strategy seriously I could have made more friends, more traffic and more exposure for my blog.

You’ve been doing incredibly great job on this strategy. Before visiting your blog, I’ve heard your name from comments on dailyblogtips and some other blogs. I will learn from you about blog commenting and more about making friends.

Thumbs up for your great post!

    • December 17, 2012 at 2:50 pm #

That’s really a big mistake Shahzad! I hope you’ll work on that from now.

I’ve been working on that from quite sometime on my blog to connect with great bloggers like you. Nice to know you found me on Daily Blog Tips.

Shahzad, I’ve read in your comment on Dear Blogger that you’re going to start another blog? What will be your niche?

  64. December 17, 2012 at 3:24 am #

Yes, it’s definitely all about building a community. It can be frustrating at first when you get so little feedback and traffic, though. But you just have to keep at it until you reach a point of “critical mass”. Then people start interacting often with you and each other. At that point the community starts to get a life of its own. It’s very satisfying when that happens.

    • December 17, 2012 at 5:57 am #

      You’re right Matt,

It can be frustrating at first, but If you keep working hard instead of giving up than as you said you can also achieve the point of critical mass lol.

It’s nice to see that you’re interacting with other bloggers Matt and you’re doing great on your blog too.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  65. December 17, 2012 at 2:26 am #

Great advice as always Ehsan. I’ve been blogging for around 3 months now and am gradually building up a network of contacts and to be honest it is a lot of fun too. It is time consuming, especially since I’ve had little time to focus on it this week and feel quite bad about it.

It has paid dividends already as I successfully invited the fabulous Savannah Grace to guest post on my blog! This was built up through regular communication to get to know each other.

    I’m seeing the benefit already.

    • December 17, 2012 at 5:49 am #

Glad you enjoyed it The Guy,

Yeah It’s a lot of fun, especially when people tend to enjoy your content and leave awesome feedback.

It’s great to see you’re also communicating with others and now I’m going to read Savannah’s guest post on your blog :)

How did you invite him to guest post on your blog?

      • December 17, 2012 at 11:33 am #

        Hi Ehsan,

        Savannah is a girl.

We’ve been exchanging e-mails for a little bit. She offered me a copy of her book about her travels in the hope that I’ll write a review; which I will.

We e-mailed/tweeted a bit since we’d travelled to a few similar places and could relate a lot to each others experiences. I really liked her writing style, particularly in her book. I approached her and asked if she’d be interested in guest blogging. (I also knew she had a book to promote so there was something in it for her).

It worked out well so far as we both did a joint social media promotion when I released the post. It turned out to be my best day yet for visitors to my site. It was a true win-win situation which we are both very happy about.

Savannah is a great writer and I’d urge everyone to read her work.

        • December 17, 2012 at 1:56 pm #

          Oops sorry for misunderstanding,

That is what called a great connection. You’ve done a wonderful job by connecting with her and doing some email exchange with her. Reviewing others product makes them love your blog and is a best way to build a relationship with them.

One of the best thing about guest posting is that It gets social media promotion from both side and nice to know you got some awesome visitors to your site.

I’ll also share her post in my network :)

  66. December 17, 2012 at 12:13 am #

I’ve been making an effort to respond to every comment because the interaction is what’s important. While a long term goal of mine is to make money with the blog, for right now, the next six months, I am going to focus on content, building a community and having some fun while I do It.

    • December 17, 2012 at 5:39 am #

      It’s great Mike,

I also suggest every newbie blogger to just don’t think of money for first few months and just focus on the content and building relationship with other bloggers because that’s what which is important.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Mike. What strategies are you using to increase the readership on your blog BTW?

  67. December 16, 2012 at 6:19 pm #

Friends and contacts always help us out with something we cannot do on own….I always stay connected with other bloggers as they provide me very helpful SEO tips and I have found a new world which is of people who are writers, bloggers, logo designers and web designers…

    • December 16, 2012 at 6:48 pm #

I’ve learned a lot of things from my blogging buddies that I wasn’t able to do myself, and that is another great thing about it.

Rocky, why don’t you consider using a gravatar image in your comments?

  68. December 16, 2012 at 5:48 pm #

Rightly said Ehsan that one must have blogger friends. They will share information and knowledge, be it via chatting, emailing or via commenting on each others blogs. Even my conditon was the same initially, but later, I established good networking with other bloggers, and I am getting to share my knowledge and know more from them too. Nice post Ehsan!

    • December 16, 2012 at 6:26 pm #

Yes I can see that you’re rocking on your blog Prathamesh. This is what every blogger should do (at least at first) to get himself up there.

      Glad you liked the post.

      Thanks for your comment.

  69. December 16, 2012 at 5:21 pm #

To grow your blog you should build better relationship with your fellow bloggers and readers. As Social media plays an important role now its better to get your story shared by so many guys. So relationship is must!

Other SEO strategy should be there too but for bloggers making a good circle is very helpful.

    Nice post Ehsan.

    • December 16, 2012 at 6:31 pm #

Connecting with your readers on social media websites is really good because as you said It plays a big role and treating your own blog like social networking blog is better.

Yup, agreed with you! I didn’t say that relationship based marketing is better than SEO marketing because I’ve seen a lot of people made big money from SEO traffic, so SEO strategy should also be there other than that.

      Thanks for sharing Atish :)

      • December 17, 2012 at 7:18 pm #

yes SEO is needed ofcourse but in the world of panda and penguin I think relationships must be there because those relationships bring you direct traffic which is always better than any kind of traffic. Don’t rely only on Google. We all need to find more direct and referral traffic too.

        :) :)

        • December 18, 2012 at 8:37 am #

Yes Atish, That is what I was trying to say. Don’t miss Harleena’a comment below where she raised the same point. Direct and referral traffic both are important.

  70. December 16, 2012 at 2:03 pm #

    • December 16, 2012 at 3:33 pm #

  71. December 16, 2012 at 11:18 am #

I very love your opinion. Built hard solid relationship with others is the most-most important thing in blogosphere. If our content is epic shit but no relationship with others. It’s does not mean nothing.

That why every new blogger have to try friends with others bloggers as many as can. If you can built super relationship with others. Means you’re the best blogger ever

    Thanks for sharing this ^_^

( Note: I’m sorry if my grammar suck. I’m new in English )

    • December 16, 2012 at 3:32 pm #

Thanks for the awesome comment Danial.

I’ve been trying to build community on my blog from quite sometime and I’m also making list of my blogger friends because this is what I love to do and in my opinion, It is one of the best strategy to grow a blog.

No problem man! I understand that. English isn’t our primary language :)

  72. December 16, 2012 at 10:59 am #

Friends and contacts are very important and they can help you grow and often promote. But
friends can help to a certain limit. Perhaps they will comment one or two here and there. Perhaps they will even share it. But most importantly you need is Google on your side. But rightly said connections are important to go up that ladder. Very right.

    • December 16, 2012 at 3:29 pm #

Glad you liked the concept Shalu.

I agree with you that the organic traffic is what which really converts and is what every blogger should work to get, but I’ve also seen bloggers who never try to connect with their readers to build relationship, so all I want to say is that building relationship with your readers is what which will encourage them to come back to your blog and even purchase from you.

Thanks for the heads up Shalu.
