Why Do You Write?

Why do you write?

Sounds like an odd question, doesn’t it?

A couple of months ago, I’ve written an article here telling my readers why do I blog. I’ve asked them to share their reasons too and got great response and different reasons from bloggers on that.

Today I thought to make it more interesting by asking you why do you write?

Identifying the reason on why do you write has a big impact on how do you write and It can help you improve your writing skill.

why do you writeWriting is such an outlet on so many levels, It helps people get to know about themselves and their own abilities better than they thought they could.

But blogging in itself is a great way to meet great people, in addition to establishing a wonderful personal brand and authority, build trust and respect.

I have seen a lot of people writing for others just for the sake of money, So I must say If you’re good at something, do it of yourself and on your own blog instead of doing it for others.

My Story:

I started writing from my school days because a pan in my hand and a blank piece of paper on the desk, writing just has to happen and I fall in love with writing from those days.

From the time I’m very young, I love the written words. Words has a mesmerizing affect on me and when words evoke emotion, offer hope, impart beauty and expose evil, It is nothing but short of a miracle.

With written words you read the stories of others and write your own stories that you want others to read, that is why I love it.

After I learned blogging and became a passionate blogger, I started writing blog articles because It is a creative outlet and because I enjoy helping and sharing with others.

I’m gather the most fulfillment when my writing connects with a reader and prompts that person to leave a comment and I enjoy responding to every comment too.

So, Why do I Write?

That’s a question which is really hard for me to answer because It’s like when someone asks me question like “So what do you do”, I’m usually stumped and I’m stumped now, but I’ll try to answer this question in this post.

Plus, I want you to answer this question by leaving a comment below.

There are actually a lot of reasons on why do I write, but I’ll list the top 4 here:

1. I write because I want that challenge:

I write because I accept the challenge of becoming a better writer and I like the way you can apply the strategy and see the results.

I’ve been spending a lot of time on learning the basics of becoming a better writer because I enjoy the creativity of writing and this is what I love.

There is just something about seeing my words on the internet (my blog), knowing that I did it myself and others will read them, and perhaps I managed to make someone’s day in a process makes me feel really great.

I know It takes a lot of time and effort to be able make my words flow, but I’m ready to accept the challenge.

2. It’s a platform to share my views:

Writing is really like a platform to share my views.

Writing about stuff I love helps me to get it out of my head and down on paper or on my blog and helps me to focus better on other things.

It’s like an archive of thoughts for me and It’s nice to have. It’s a bit comfort, Also knowing that my girlfriend will be able to read it lol.

Whenever I come with interesting blog post ideas, It makes be bit trigger crazy and If I don’t jot it down there’s chance to get it forget, so whenever I sit to write a post on my blog, despite all the other reasons the primary one is to get it out of my head and share it with others.

3. I write because I want to share what I love:

Writing helps me to share what I love and what I know better than someone else.

As a blogger running guide to blogging community, I do answer blogging questions everyday on social media site or through email. I do this because I love blogging and I love helping others sharing it with others.

It has even paid off in the sense that I’m becoming better at what I love. Just the thought that I’m trying to teach someone something makes me want to get that much better at it.

Most of what I write on my blog is based on my experience and I’ll continue doing it because of the positive feedback and interaction I’ve received and engaged in with my readers.

It has even provided me with form of entertainment and reasons to do things that I wanted to do.

4. To network with other people:

I do write on my blog not just because I want to make money or I want to establish myself as an expert in my niche, but also to network with other like minded people around the globe and hear what they have to say.

I have learned so much from people whom I networked with. Commenting on my posts or reading their blog posts. Well that is why I treat my blog like social networking blog.

Reading is one of the best tip to improve your writing skills, so reading other blogs and commenting on them also helped me to connect with other bloggers as well as to improve my writing.

Now I ask it to you:

I’m genuinely interested in hearing your story, that is the reason I wrote this post.

I would love for you to share your reasons on why do you write, while also telling me about your experience with writing in comment section.

    Hey Ehsan !
Well i liked your reasons to write posts. Actually every blogger has valid reasons to write. The ultimate reason is money making and that’s fact, we all have to face it.
Well my primary purpose to write is that “it’s my hobby” and I can also earn with my hobby.
Some one has said that make your idle sitting worthy.

    Hi Ehsan

Great post. I write because I want to share my thoughts with others, else there is no other reason to write. But had the technology been so advance that it could have read the mind, I wouldn’t have written a single word.

Thanks for sharing this great piece of knowledge.

I write mostly for my own pleasure. I have a Linux tech blog and find I search my own experiences to find how I did something in the past when I run into the same problem. And I think I also write just to hear my own voice. The fact that I make a little money off the ads on the site is inconsequential.Thanks.

Eshan, you caught me! I did forget to comment as to why I write… LOL!

Honestly, I write for my online marketing business and to make money. In the process of doing so over the last 19 months I have found that I have been able to help others in various ways.

Personally, I write with purpose. Whether it’s to promote an affiliate product, my business or a marketing tool that could help my readers. I always have a goal in mind.

Blogging as a hobby is OK, but it doesn’t help pay the bills.

    Thanks my friend for sharing!!!

Actually this is what I have also been doing from quite sometime, but I love writing even If I don’t make money from it. I agree with you that blogging as a hobby is good, but doesn’t pay the bills.

Thanks for your comment Galen :)

People write due to different reasons. Some want to make fast money while some want to make themselves popular… By reading this post I understood that why you write and for what reasons you became a blogger…I really love the way you write and especially the way you connect with the readers of this blog..I am already a big fan of the way you write on this blog and after going through the first Ebook written by you I have got more impressed……I think that you love what you write and you should definitely continue doing the same…

I started creative writing when I was a little kid and dabbled with poetry, fantasy stories from the age of 7 or so. Poetry and creative writing stuck with me for years and I even took creative writing classes in high school and wrote poetry constantly for over 25 years. It was only in 2008 that any of my writing ended up online in the form of blogs, and I even shared my poetry online, previously I had only been published in 2 poetry volumes.

Writing is an expression and a way for me to share my thoughts, ideas, excitement and I just enjoy doing it and always have. It is a form of expression and nothing makes better use of Freedom of Speech than using your voice online.

    Hi Ehsan,

Another interesting question! For me I write because it helps me express myself freely. I’m not much of a great talker but I discovered that I think too much most times. Writing has offered me a way to ‘unload’ much of what I carry inside and keeping myself from choking :)

I think this is why I have so much in love with blogging.

    Hi Ehsan,

Well I can’t say I’ve been all my life, actually I only started my blog about 2 months ago.
But so far what I like most about writing is the finally I’m starting to develop my own style and I don’t need too much research to write a long post. So for me that’s making progress and I think that’s the best thing about writing that there will always be room left for more.

I really enjoyed reading your post, keep it up Ehsan, all the best to you.

Thanks for sharing this blog post by email. I wouldn’t have noticed it otherwise.

Well, I write for all the reasons you shared for yourself. Those are all important reasons.

However, one important reasons why I decided to write was, I am a business development coach. I noticed that, the people who knew me personally, they always admired and got excited about what I recommended them to do.

On the other hand, people who didn’t know me personally of those who were far away from me, always wished if they had an opportunity to be more closer to me.

So, I started to write to educate and share my views on common challenges my team faced on regular basis. But as I started to write, I realized that there were many more people who didn’t have what I had to offer. Therefore, I decided to cover more subject areas and network with other like minded leaders.

And slowly but surely, the momentum caught up and I became a regular blogger. But thank you for bringing this topic. I enjoyed sharing my journey with you and your readers here.

I think you have some effective reasons here on why do you write. Being a blogger myself I know the importance of having a good writing skills.

Thanks so much for sharing your journey here and I appreciate your comment.

      Thanks again!

Hi Ehsan, I write because knowledge should not be hidden, it should be spread to others. In our daily life we learn so many things sharing will not only help others but also we learn better. As you said in Point no 4 it also helps to build network & the first step which helps in writing is by commenting.

    • November 28, 2012 at 6:22 pm #

I agree with your point on knowledge should be shared and not shouldn’t be hidden. Thanks for sharing your views.

      Have a great week :)

  24. November 28, 2012 at 4:06 pm #

    Hi Ehsan,
I write for one of the most basic of reasons: I am a writer.

    That is who I am.

If I do not write, I lose my identity as a writer. But of course, if that were to be the only reason I write, it would mean that i write for selfish reasons – just for me.

I also write to share my insights with my audience. Over time, I have found answers that came from making mistakes over and over again and learning what works and what doesn’t. I would feel selfish if I failed to communicate such insights for my audience to learn from.

    • November 28, 2012 at 6:06 pm #

That is a great reason Yeremi, but that shouldn’t be the only reason on why you write!

I also love writing and I also call myself a writer, but I have a lot of other reasons (other than those 4 mentioned in the post).

Thanks for sharing your views Yeremi and thanks for your comment.

Frankly this is among the top posts you’ve ever written, Superb! You explain why you’re passionate about writing and blogging, most people don’t do that. They just setup a blog, say that they’re passionate about writing and blogging but are into it simply to make money. That’s the blunt.

Awesome of you to share this :)

I write because I want to express myself. Period.

I write because words on paper come easily, because many people have told me that they enjoyed my stories, and because it is a way to leave a trace somewhere, for my children or anyone interested in hearing what I have to say. I also write travel articles because I need to eat :)

    • November 25, 2012 at 6:52 am #

Yes It is a great way to leave a trace somewhere and If you’re good at something, than you can also write it to get something out from your mind.

      Thanks for stopping by Pauline.

  34. November 24, 2012 at 6:57 pm #

In all seriousness, you have some excellent reasons, here. I would say that the challenge continues to motivate and the learningis something writers continue to do throughout life, if they really love writing. We know that we are never perfect; a year from now, we’ll think of a better way to say whatever it was we thought we’d said so beautifully today.

I wasn’t kidding when I said, on Facebook, that my reasons include all of the following, and then some: to entertain, inform, educate, make people think, make them laugh, make them feel, help them do a task, help them use a product, transport them to worlds that can only be imagined, kill my enemies legally (in myriad interesting and cathartic ways), share interesting tidbits of information I found, provoke a reaction, stir the pot, tap into collective emotions…

Who but a writer can do all those things – and all in the same work?

    • November 28, 2012 at 12:32 pm #

Glad to know you think that I have some excellent reasons here and I agree with you that the learning process never ends, Ones I’ve heard that even a newbie can teach life lessons to someone.

I must say you too have some effective reasons here and thanks for sharing it with us.

I appreciate your comment Holly :)

Good question and a difficult one to answer. I cannot speak for others but only for myself. I can say that it gives me something to do, enjoy penning my thoughts and ideas and if someone shares or talks about it – it gives me a lot of pleasure. But all in all, its a platform to share your views.

    • November 24, 2012 at 7:22 pm #

You got it Shalu, you write because you want to share your experience with others which I guess is “Traveling” right?

  36. November 24, 2012 at 3:43 pm #

    Interesting topic Ehsan,

I do believe that I first stared blogging on a Travel Blog, just to be able to keep in touch with friend, and to do practice – descriptive writing – for a writing course I did some years ago. Nowaday’s I also have a special blog about the - Writer’s Lifestyle - and Sometimes I even attempted with starting to write a Novel as you can read about in a post I once wrote on (my own) Travel Lifestyle Blog: Writing a Novel on your Vacation?

When - back than - I discovered that on
the original Travel Blog (not ‘my own’ blog) there was
advertising on it, I was wondering if it wouldn’t be more
interesting to also get the advertising money
    from that advertising myself……,

That’s how I discovered - Affiliate Marketing - and how you can make money with your own blog. So now I also have - amung other things - also a blog about Blogging & Affiliate Marketing.

I also like the whole Blogging thing because it’s Fun and to help others, to connect with like-minded people as a ‘Mastermind Group’, to be able to share and learn, Blogging and doing Affiliate Marketing as a Lifestyle.

    • November 24, 2012 at 7:37 pm #

Thanks for sharing your story Van, Well I just about your Blogging and affiliate marketing blog till now and didn’t you know you have a Writing Lifestyle and Travel Lifestyle blog too.

I’ll surely check that blog out bro. I too love blogging and connecting with other like minded people through it.

      Thanks for stopping by.

    Hey Ehsan!

Finally got chance to reply you! :-D

Well, the question is not odd. It’s a quite tricky question. It sounds easier, but when some really comes to answer it becomes the most toughest question of the day ;-)

    So, Why do I write?

Hmmm… this question is not easy for me to answer honestly, but let me share some of my words.

I have start writing since I am in the 7th grade. In the start, my writing skills were very poor, and one can easily bash them – not because of the grammar and mistakes, but due to I think lot of things, and mixes up them in a single line. – it still happens!

I tried to cover up most of the exploits in my writing, and come over the internet for simple networking in the earlier days of 2006. I wasted lot of my time in communicating with different region of people to explore more words, and ancents to improve my writing skills.

However, after all the learning sessions. I came across to the blogging profession. I started couple blogs, and ended up successfully. Since I start writing blogs, it becomes my passion and very attractive for me day by day.

there is a very long story ;-) I don’t want to bore you! :-P

    • November 24, 2012 at 7:01 pm #

      Hey Hamza,

Finally received your comment here lol :P

Well, I thought It’s sounds on odd question when you ask it from someone directly as I did in my headline just to “grab” people’s attention here, but I know that after reading the whole post, It becomes a tricky question for everyone.

It wasn’t easy for me too to include my reasons of why do I write in the post, but I tried and came up with 4 top reasons on that (Yes the 5th one is in Raaj’s comment above :P)

I too started it in my school days and mine was poor too, but as I was writing lover so I put a lot of hard work and tried to improve it from those days. Well, I don’t think that communicating with other people is wastage of time! Do you think?

I really enjoyed your opinions and story Hamza, Thanks for sharing it :)

      Enjoy your week.

      • November 24, 2012 at 7:07 pm #

Actually, “by the wastage of time” I wanted to refer those communications that does not lead me in any direction. Just random social networking communication :P – the rest you can understand, what I am saying here!

        • November 24, 2012 at 7:21 pm #

Yup, I got it Hamza. Even I spent a lot of my time on Yahoo chat rooms :P haha

          Thanks anyway.

  38. November 24, 2012 at 10:18 am #

Nicely put Ehsan. And I can surely say that our networking (yours and mine) has been great so far! We’ve discovered so many new things in each other. Shared so many ideas, opinions and much more! I guess that’s what writing is all about.

If speaking is not possible (as you don’t get to ‘meet’ each other), writing is the way forward!

    • November 24, 2012 at 6:55 pm #

Really a great reason Raaj, I must had to include this one as another reason in the post, but seems It’s too late now. Thanks you for adding this point in comments section.

Yup, we’ve been learning and sharing from each other so many things and all the credit goes to writing.
That is why I love writing, do you?

      Thanks for your comment Raaj.

  39. November 23, 2012 at 8:13 pm #

I write simply because I feel the world must really listen what I have to say. Writing also enlightens me greatly.

    • November 23, 2012 at 9:54 pm #

Good for you Kubenlah, What do you write about?

  40. November 23, 2012 at 5:32 pm #

    Love the topic Ehsaan!

Well, I’m a little late, but glad I made it. :)

I love to write for the joy of writing- it’s something that runs in my genes. My Mom used to be great with words, though she never really had any blog or wrote anything commercial. Similarly, my sister is a writer, and my Dad too after his retirement, writes! So it runs in our family.

Other than that, I feel writing is a wonderful way of expression. If you can convey what you are feeling in your heart – on to paper – nothing can be better – isn’t it? For me, this is what really works, and I write because I love to share with everyone what I feel and want to say. I guess words have tremendous power :)

Also, I write or blog because I love helping people in whatever little way I can, by sharing my own life experiences as well as a little research. And I love interacting and connecting with people, for which blogging is a wonderful platform.

Oh…I can really go on and on about why I write, because I am a professional freelance writer and blogger too, so that’s my passion and profession both.

Thanks for sharing, and making us come out with our reasons. Have a wonderful weekend :)

    • November 23, 2012 at 9:45 pm #

      Hey Harleena,

Well, I don’t think you’re too late because there are a lot more comments to come in this post :P

Ohhh, I must say that your family must be called “Family Writers”. Well, my dad were a writer too and he had a passion in writing, but he wasn’t that good.

Yeah, this is a great way to express your love to someone too, isn’t it? :D As you said, we can convey whatever feeling is in our heart for anyone in a paper. I too love helping others in blogging by sharing my experiences about it which I learned along the way.

Good to know you’re a pro freelance too. Well, I’ve never tried freelancing because I love to write on my own blog instead of writing for others :)

Thanks for your comment, have a great week you too.

    Great post, mate.
I really love posts that encourage discussions like this one. I write just because technology is my passion, I learn new stuff everyday and I want to share to others.
Of course, I also hope my blog will become more well-known and I could earn money from that, but they come later. :)

    • November 23, 2012 at 8:00 am #

Thanks Tuan for sharing your views?

Do you love only technology? Not writing?

Well, we learn new stuff by reading other blogs and newspapers, but writing is different thing which everyone should enjoy right?

      Thanks :)

  44. November 23, 2012 at 1:58 am #

    Hey Ehsan,

I truly believe that every single person has something to offer to society. We can learn from anybody, since each individual has their own “gift”.
Blogging is one of the most flexible way to share that gift.
    Blogging is giving.

thanks for the thought provoking post

    • November 23, 2012 at 7:59 am #

Hey Akos, You know one of the best thing I like most in blogging is that It connects me with great people like you. I agree with you that blogging is all about giving, but on the other hand It also makes us some money right?

I write because I love to. Its a great platform to express views on certain topics. I love tech and hence I blog about it. Moreover, this tech blogging experience can act as a great leverage in the job resume; at least for me since I am into the technical field. One can even network with other people which expands their horizons for blogging because it invites sharing of each others views, ideas, etc.

Nice post, thanks for the share!

    • November 23, 2012 at 7:51 am #

Thanks for expressing your views Prathamesh. That means the another reason on why you’re writing is that you have to right?

If you’re doing it because It’s your job to do or you’re making it money than you must also enjoy it, do you?

BTW, thanks for stopping by Prathamesh :)

      • November 23, 2012 at 8:54 am #

I too can’t stop myself from writing Anurag. Yes, I do update my blog ones or twice a week, but that doesn’t mean I don’t write much. Guest posting, commenting and all these things takes a lot of time.

Glad you enjoyed my story and I’m sure you’ve your own story too to share with us?

  49. November 22, 2012 at 11:36 am #

    Hmm why do I write?
When I was in class 9 our principal inspired me to write for a local magazine called WISDOM. Though doubting myself after editing what I wrote myself 30 times I sent it.A month later when I bough that magazine my article was in there. I sent it to school and for a whole month it was on the notice board. Everyday i would go and read what I wrote. For 30 days… I read it again when I am low when i am happy. Even today after writing each blog post I read it later on. Gives me joy. Even if I dont make a penny from writing i still will write and even if make $1000 i will write no matter what because it gives me joy.

    • November 22, 2012 at 1:04 pm #

      You got me George,

It gives me joy too. I love writing and I’ll keep doing it even If It doesn’t make me any money.
Whenever I read my old blog posts, It makes me feel great and gives me joy that I’m still getting traffic on that posts from Google and people are still reading what I’ve written.

Thanks so much for sharing your school story George :)

  53. November 22, 2012 at 4:50 am #

    HI Ehsan,

I write because I like to write what I like. Little bit confusing … :D. I start my blog because I like the idea of make a living from blog. And I found that many bloggers failed on this.

That’s why I start writing in my blogs to share what I’ve done so that others can take advantage of.

thanks for asking through this posts my friend :)

    • November 22, 2012 at 12:49 pm #

Okto, you mean you write because you have to? or because you enjoy doing it?

I too started blogging with the intention of making money, but after sometime, I started loving it and I’ll keep doing it even If I don’t make any money from it.

  56. November 21, 2012 at 7:03 pm #

    Hey Ehsan,

What a great topic and thanks for sharing with us why “you” write.

Huh… So as for me I “blog” so that I can help other people cut down on a lot of the things they’ve been discouraged about while on their blogging journey. I love to share what I’ve learned and hope that it can help others save time searching how to do a lot of things they are pretty confused about. I don’t write for the love of writing though. I am here to build relationships as well as my business but I mostly enjoy just helping others.

Thanks for this opportunity and enjoy your day!

    • November 21, 2012 at 8:50 pm #

Ohh thank you so much Adrienne,

That’s really a topic and a question that I wanted to ask from all of the bloggers whom know because you know everyone has different tastes and opinions like you’re writing because you want to build relationships and you’re writing because you have to right? But I write because I love it. Other than blogging, writing is my 2nd love and I really want to be as famous in blogging and writing thing as Justin Bieber haha.

      Thanks for stopping by Adrienne.

  57. November 21, 2012 at 5:13 pm #

    Hi Ehsan,
We all love to blog and we all love to write because it is the only way to reach out top the thousands of followers and readers who read your blog. Moreover, the friends, followers or whatever you may call them, who come to your blog and appreciate your work are there only because they loved what you write. Keep up the good work.

    • November 21, 2012 at 5:27 pm #

Those are the reasons on why I write Vineet and those are great reasons too. Feeling that people will read what I write and they’ll appreciate it makes me love writing and that is why I write.

Isn’t making money another reason for you Vineet?

      Thanks for your comment BTW?

      • November 22, 2012 at 4:58 am #

Yes definitely, earning money from a blog is a reward for the hard work and efforts one puts into his blog. Moreover, who hates a few bucks… :D….

        • November 22, 2012 at 12:50 pm #

haha I agree with you Vineet, I started blogging just to make money, but after getting into blogosphere and making a lot of great friends like you, I started loving the blogging thing. Now I’ll keep doing it even If It doesn’t make me money.

          • November 23, 2012 at 4:01 am #

Yeah Right Ehsan, blogging can be extremely enjoying and addictive if one has a network and friends. Thanks…

          • November 23, 2012 at 8:01 am #

Yup, that is what I’m trying to do here on my blog. I want to treat my blog as social networking blog and a community of guided bloggers.

  58. November 21, 2012 at 4:38 pm #

You have shared some great points , Ehsan. I agree with all of them. But let’s not forget blogging is also lots of fun. You get to learn new things and gain knowledge when we read someone else’s blog. Since last year , blogging has become my favorite hobby.

    • November 21, 2012 at 4:50 pm #

Yes, but If you blog about what you love right? There are a lot of bloggers who blogs just to make money without being passionate about the topic which makes them hate the blogging thing.

What do you say on this?

      • November 22, 2012 at 2:16 am #

Yeah , I love programming on different languages. That’s when I decided to create my blog about programming. Though I haven’t made any money from my blog in the past year, I still do it beacause I love it.

        • November 22, 2012 at 12:46 pm #

Lahaul, I must say that If you do what you love and what you enjoy than you’ll enjoy doing it even If you don’t make any money from it. I do blogging not because I want to make money, but because It is my passion and I love doing it.

What about you? Do you love blogging too?

      • December 14, 2012 at 12:50 pm #

Writing just for the cash isn’t cool. If you want to enjoy writing, then you have to develop a passion for writing.I use to focus on making money before, but recently, things have changed.i write to get traffic. When i get lots of views and comment on my post,i feel fulfilled and the cash that comes is like a bonus to me.This helps me to write well.

        • December 14, 2012 at 1:46 pm #

Thanks for sharing your views Iteire, Writing is what I love and I have a passion in it and on the other hand It also makes me money which is as you said bonus for me.

    • November 22, 2012 at 9:30 am #

I do agree with you, I write because I want to improve my English, not for any else reason.

      • November 22, 2012 at 12:55 pm #

Just to improve your English? I thought there are more reasons like making money etc?

        Really no more reasons Trung?
