Do You Blog About The Topic Which You Love?

Blog TopibShould you blog about the topic which you love or the topic which is profitable?

Today I want to discuss about something which I have been reading from long time and is common cliche among all bloggers.

I’m sure that you have been guided about it before, but today I used to make it clear and wanted to give this advice myself that If you want to start a blog than should you choose the topic in which you have passion or the topic which is profitable and will make you good money, but you don’t have any knowledge about it.

Check out: 10 Awesome ways for finding blog post ideas for your blog

The answer is simple, “You really have to do what you love If you want to be a long time successful blogger”.

If you blog about topic which you don’t like than:

You’ll give up

You’ll lose interest

You’ll quit

There’s no one in the world who became successful doing what he/she hates just for desire of money. Correct me If I’m wrong and show me If there’s anyone?

Follow your passion, success will follow you!

Remember that If you really want to be a successful blogger and want to make money with your blog than you must follow your passion because If you blog only for money than there’s no way you can write such great articles as those who love their blog topic and are passionate about.

What will happen If you blog about something in which you don’t have any knowledge is that your blog will probably fail because people seeking information want to get the information from someone who is truly qualified to give it.

If you aren’t qualified to give information to your audience about your niche, they’ll likely notice.

People starting a blog in a subject they either have no interest, no real experiences and no real passion just for making money is really a hilarious.

You have to be knowledgeable and passionate about the topic of your blog so that you can provide useful and unique content to your readers.

There are hundreds even thousands of blogs about “Making money” started by someone who have never made a penny online.

It’s like fat guy blogging about weight loss lol

I started my blogging journey with FREE Blogspot blog just to make money with very little idea of blogging without being passionate about the topic which I had selected. What happened to me is that I lost focus and It was really difficult for me to write about those topics, so a lot of my time and effort wasted with those blogs.

Money Is not Everything:

If the topic in which you are passionate isn’t profitable than you’ll not make a lot of money, but writing about what you love produces much greater substances and depth in your content which in turn is the best way to grow a loyal readership, which is more than money.

You’ll be more productive blogger because you have knowledge and real experience about your niche.

If you write about something you don’t like or don’t connect with, you’ll never be satisfied with it even If you get paid for it because money isn’t everything in the end, is it?

Every Niche is Profitable:

People often tend to think that profitable niches like business and health are only ones that pays good, but that’s totally wrong.

I say that every niche is profitable If you have quality content and audience interested in your content.

I’ve been seeing that some people go crazy with topics like Business, Health and Celebs etc and they earn good money with their blog, but there are a lot of bloggers who try to make some money with the same topic, but they can’t achieve anything.

If you write what you love and write it well, you can usually find a way to make It pay.

This is what every pro bloggers has been doing like Darren has been doing from years in his multi-million dollar Digital Photography School. You can make good money with any topic If you love doing it.

In other words, If someone started a blog in any profitable niche in which they don’t have passion and If they find it difficult to come up with blog posts ideas on that topic than they’ll surely lose interest and will quit, no matter how much money they’re making.

Your turn:

So what do you think now? You blog about topic you love or the topic which is profitable?

For all the bloggers out there, I would love to hear your thoughts in comments.

Yes Ehsaan, I do Blog about the topic I love. I love science, specially Astro-Physcis. I’m really passionate about it so I blog about it.

Is Tekdig all about science? As far as I know you also write about blogging/SEO related topics there, don’t you?

  2. June 17, 2013 at 3:16 am #

I know every blogger is running behind high paying niche in terms of Adsense & affiliate programs, but intelligent bloggers always choose those topics to blog which they love. I also do this.

Your views are similar to me. Thanks.

Hey Avinash, good to see ya here. Seems you’re also a blogging lover like me?

      What are you blogging lately?

  3. November 12, 2012 at 7:50 am #

Actually i want to say another thing is that i love to blog on the topics which i love such as blogging and make money online. Although now iam learning new things on various niche.

    • November 12, 2012 at 1:09 pm #

Junior, You do blog about those topics because It’s famous and profitable or you love really love and are knowledgeable about those topics?

  4. October 12, 2012 at 7:36 pm #

Blogging about something you honestly have no knowledge of is tough work, even if that niche/topic is profitable. You’re right, money isn’t everything. At the end of the day, it all boils down to how happy you are with what you’ve come up with. Money can be spent and will soon be gone, but your sense of pride, no one can take that away from you.

    • October 12, 2012 at 8:57 pm #

      Yup Mericel.

Blogging and educating both are same in my opinion. Some people study just to be become a big man in future with lots of money, but being happy is what which we need. As you said money comes and goes, so It all boils up with how happy and satisfied you are with your work. Are you enjoying it or not.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Mericel. I appreciate your comment too :)

  5. October 12, 2012 at 7:02 pm #

Excellent article. I totally agree with writing about what you love and what you know. When I first started blogging, it was about a business venture that was profitable for a while, but then it just fizzled out – as did my blog. Now I just trust that the money will come.

    • October 12, 2012 at 8:54 pm #

      Same happened with me Sandra,

I was just a newbie without being a knowledgeable about my selected topic when I first started blogging. I started it just for the sake of making money, but later after learning something about blogging I realized that selecting the wrong topic was my biggest mistake.

Thanks for stopping by on my blog and leaving a comment, I appreciate it :)

  6. October 10, 2012 at 2:38 pm #

A lot of people choose the wrong topic because they think they’ll make money from it. This might have worked in the early days of blogging when there was a lot less competition. But these days that tactic is pointless. It will take several months of hard work to get even a modicum of targeted traffic. So if your heart’s not in it, you just won’t last the distance.

As you say, every niche can be profitable. And you can make money from blogs in unusual ways, too. For example, instead of serving ads or promoting products, you could offer your services as a teacher on your blog.

  7. September 28, 2012 at 1:21 am #

Great article Ehsan! Yes, most people do blog about what they love to blog about. But others do it for business or money purposes. I think it would be great if people blogged about their interests rather than business and marketing. Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed reading it.

    • September 28, 2012 at 2:41 pm #

Yeah, other than business and marketing there are lots of other ways to start a blog about. I’m a footballer too, so I’m gonna start a blog related to soccer and freestyle too :)

  8. September 27, 2012 at 11:52 am #

Nice post and i am totally satisfied with you because blogging is not all about money but through blogging we can share our knowledge with others and if we start a blog related to the topic which i love thin I can easily write any post at any situation but if we open a blog on profitable topic then we are totally depend on others.

    • September 27, 2012 at 12:13 pm #

Yeah, you’ll be totally depend on others who suggested you to choose that topic If you choose a topic in which you don’t have passion. Chasing your passion is the key to blogging success.

I appreciate your comment Sudipto. Thanks for stopping by.

  9. September 27, 2012 at 9:02 am #

well i like the sentence were you said “money is not everything” its right we should concentrate on our niche and give our reader best and informative posts.

    • September 27, 2012 at 12:16 pm #

If you have the ability to convince your readers with your contest than you are standing at good level and that means you’re passionate about your topic.

Winning the heart of your readers is must.

Thanks for your comment Harley :)

  10. September 27, 2012 at 5:06 am #

“Every Niche is Profitable.” Ehsan , I am not agree 100% with this thing. Your “Digital Photography School” example is a really good example . But you also know Darren make more money from problogger.net than digital-photography-school.com. However this post is good and I enjoy it. :-)

    • September 27, 2012 at 12:17 pm #

Darren doesn’t make more money from ProBlogger than Digital Photography School. His earns most of his money form his photography blog no ProBlogger.

BTW, Thanks for your comment Raplus.

    September 25, 2012 at 4:50 am #

    Hi Ehsan,
I would also like to add: that many people who have learned how to make money online usually think of ways to make more money, even if it means they do not like what they are doing at all. However, I like bloggers who I think really love what they are doing because you can see that their passion for their blogging never seems to dwindle. Like what Katherin said, money isn’t everything. It just comes and goes.

    • September 25, 2012 at 8:04 am #

Hey Felicia, I also like those bloggers who writes about what they’re passionate about and are knowledgeable. I can figure whether they’re interested in their blog topic or no by reading their content.

The bloggers who write about what they love than you can find interesting and attention grabby likes on their content and readers will feel that blogger is enjoying writing.

Thanks for stopping bu Felicia :)

  14. September 22, 2012 at 12:27 pm #

I am a firm believer in good content; and if you don’t have a passion for what you blog about, the content will seem weak. Passion always shows in your writing and voice, so I think it’s honestly critical to blog about topics you love and enjoy.

At the end of the day, a successful blog is one that can deliver excellent value to readers; without a blogger who actually enjoys what he is writing about; they could never blog with enough knowledge/care to provide enough value for those readers.

    Love the blog.

    Joey

Great to see you Cudjoe, I’m happy to know you like my point on money is not everything. Gaining trust, getting loyal readers and building great relationships is more than money. I agree with you on that the priority of every blogger should be the zeal to help the masses.

Well yes, one has to be interested and passionate about his/her niche, it does helps to go a long term and to be a successful and also one can provide can provide useful and good content to your readers by being so. And nicely quoted “follow your passion, success will follow you.” Thanks Ehsan for sharing this wonderful post :)

  18. September 20, 2012 at 11:01 am #

Like you said, you have to write about something which you have a passion for otherwise people will not visit, or if they do they will be able to tell from your writing that you are not that interested. Ever subject which you write about you should be able to generate an income from in some way. Specially if its something which you have a passion for. It will make it much easier to think of ways to make money

    • September 20, 2012 at 12:48 pm #

    Hi Ehsan,
Awesome post buddy, and its true every niche is profitable, if you write properly and Perfectly, only by your knowledge you can make money from blogging, Niche is not that much important if you know everything about the topic what you are going to write..

    • September 18, 2012 at 8:13 pm #

Hey Nishant, Glad you liked my point here. You’re right that If you know about something better any others than you’ll be able to write more and better. That’s the key point.

  23. September 18, 2012 at 4:26 pm #

I’d love to blog about my passion. For me it is easier to share my ideas and thoughts to my readers if I am talking about things that interest me. It will also be easy for me to update my posts and interact with like minded people simply because I have a genuine passion for the niche that I cover.

Hey Anne, Welcome to my blog. May I know your interest?

  24. Shalu Sharma
    September 18, 2012 at 3:01 pm #

Its true that not everything is about money but I have to say that blogging is centred around making money. Its an economic activity where the ultimate goal is to make money. But I remember when I started YouBihar it was not about money and still its not about making money. Any blog that starts, needs to crawl before it can get up and start running. But not all blogs are profitable, suppose if you want to start a blog on Afghanistan, would you be able to find enough advertisers. But that’s just my opinion. There are some niches more profitable than others.

    • September 18, 2012 at 8:09 pm #

Shalu, Let me tell you that If I start a blog related to something about Afghanistan like Afghan culture, Afghan trends or Afghan school than I’ll be able get $1 a click because there are a lot of advertisers on these topics.

That is because almost 70% of Afghan people lives in different parts of the work like US, Canada and other countries and only 30% of them lives in Afghanistan. I ones decided to start a blog about any of these topics, but then I changed my mind.

BTW, thanks for your suggestion and comment Shalu.

  25. September 18, 2012 at 1:49 pm #

You have to love what you’re doing. I’ll agree with that. If you don’t, then you do a great disservice to your readers!

  26. Aditya
    September 18, 2012 at 1:18 pm #

My views differ completely. There are many friends of mine who hate to be a doctor but have taken up the course just because their parents forced them to. Are they still unhappy? Maybe or maybe not but eventually they will learn to love it. So, what I mean to say is that no matter what you’re doing learn to love it because our passions are based on the way we think, communicate and do things they are not imbibed us at birth, so you can shape your passions the way you want and can learn to love it as well.

However, your post gave me memories of the film ’3 Idiots’. Have you watched it?

    Aditya

    • September 18, 2012 at 8:03 pm #

Haha, I have watched 3 Idiots several times and that was my favorite movie of 2011 too. I disagree with you on this Aditya because as we’ve watched on 3 Idiots that If you do what you don’t like than you’ll never get success, Nothing than low monthly salary.

If you’re not enjoying your life than money isn’t anything for you. You must love what you do and don’t force yourself to do what you hate just for the sake of money or just because your parents are forcing you do to it.

Thanks for reminding me about that awesome movie, I’m gonna watch it again tonight lol :D

you’re right, many newbie blogger like me has experience in that position. So we want continue or give up after that, it,s the two choices we have to take. In basically, blogging is issuing what is in our minds with the word. Knowledge and experience we have is the major capital….
    thanks

  28. September 18, 2012 at 10:16 am #

    Hi Ehsan…
    Nice Post bro…..
I do agree that one should write on topic in which he/she has passion and knowledge otherwise after couple of weeks or months they will loose interest and then quit blogging.

Blogging will never make you rich over night it require lots of patience and dedication.
I am doing blogging because i love it.

    • September 18, 2012 at 10:40 am #

    September 18, 2012 at 9:35 am #

It was a nice article which was worth reading.

In my point of view, blog on any topic which provides something new unique and attractive to its readers and visitors is profitable. I’m agree with you over this point.. But sometimes you need to search extra out of topic only to earn money.. In blogging that’s a part time job, but the real job is the topic in which you’ve knowledge and passion. I myself try to earn from special events.

    • September 18, 2012 at 10:45 am #

      Hey Abdul,

I have seen some blogger doing great with their blog, but they aren’t earning a single penny from their blog and they’re doing great and they also have huge number of loyal readers.

As I mentioned in my blog that money isn’t everything at all, If you get loyal readers and subscribers, people to love your blog. It is so much more than money.

Thanks for your comment Abdul, I really appreciate it :)

    September 18, 2012 at 8:08 am #

    Hey, Ehsan

If you have the chance to blog about something you are not 100% in love with but could be profitable then that’s fine. I mean we go to work to earn money, how many people love their job? not many. It helps as you will have a real passion for it but its not always needed.

    • September 18, 2012 at 8:22 am #

That isn’t find for me Simmeon because If you’re not enjoying your work than It will be nothing but just boring for you. Why don’t try to do what you love instead of forcing yourself on the way where you don’t want to go?

  31. September 18, 2012 at 5:43 am #

    Hi Ehsan,
First time here on your blog :)

I think that it depends on the individual, but I believe that we should blog about the topic we love rather than blog about something that aims to only get money because we will surely lose our motivation and interest on that in the long run.

I like your example “It’s like a fat guy blogging about weight loss.” I’d be more compelled to visit a blog wherein the owner used to be a fat guy and he’s sharing on his site how he got slim and how he lives a healthy life in the present time.

I opened up my blog to share to others about the topics I love to talk about. When money comes in, then it’s a nice bonus for me. :)

    • September 18, 2012 at 8:29 am #

Welcome to my blog Johanna and appreciate your comment.

I do love my blog and my work even If It don’t make me money because I enjoy doing it, but on other hand If It’s making me money than like you said It’s nice bonus for me.

I have seen some people doing what they hate just to make some money, but I would suggest them don’t take themselves too seriously because money isn’t everything at all.

BTW, Thanks Johanna for landing on my blog.

  32. September 18, 2012 at 2:43 am #

    Hi Ehsan,
Blogging is all about passion and things you love. Blogging only for money and profits doesn’t work. Yes, if you are passionate about things you blog then certainly you can profits from your blog but that depends on your monetization methods.
As you said every niche is profitable till it interests you. Value sells more than products and you cannot provide value to your readers if you only focus on making money out of your blog.
    Thanks for this great article.

    • September 18, 2012 at 7:55 pm #

You’re right Vineet, Value sells more than anything and your passion is what which will make you successful. But that doesn’t mean learning the right monetization methods isn’t necessary.

You should also try to learn the right Monetization and promotion tactics If you really want to make money from your blog.

  33. September 17, 2012 at 9:52 pm #

Agreed! Blogging is about passion. For those who wanna earn money from their blogs, I’ve something for you. Use the topics that you are passionate about and write on them, you’ll get a whole lot of followers and readers. Then you can always start a new blog using a niche which is considered as a “profitable niche” and you can invite easily your loyal readers to that blog. I’m not sure if you agree with me on this one or not but it came into my mind after reading this and I shared.
Anyways thanks Ehsan! Nice Article (Y)

    • September 18, 2012 at 8:40 am #

I got your point Fahad and that works too. First you need to start an authority blog in topic on which you’re interested in and you have real passion and experience, Than after building some good relationship with your readers and getting loyal readers than start niche blogs and link them on your authority blog to get traffic and backlinks. That will work best.

Thanks for the awesome suggestion Fahad, Appreciate your comment :)

      • September 24, 2012 at 8:22 pm #

Exactly! and it’s always a pleasure to comment and share suggestions here at Guide and News :)

  34. September 17, 2012 at 8:33 pm #

Blogging on the Niches you love is the way to go. Else at some point of time you are going to run out of fuel and there would be no one who can help you. If the niche is not of interest soon it would become a burden. The best bet is to go in the field what you really love from inside. Thanks for the post Ehsan

    • September 18, 2012 at 8:34 am #

Yeah Anubhab, I’ve been blogging about “Healthy lifestyle” niche from long time without having any knowledge about living healthy life just because It was the high paying niche. I really hated that blog because It was hard for me to come up with blog post ideas.

      Thanks for stopping by Anubhab.

  36. September 17, 2012 at 2:32 pm #

    Thanks for your post Ehsan,
Also thanks for asking this question about writing about a topic you love – or –
about a topic which is profitable. An important concept in business is to recognise
that in business it you frequently create situations where you don’t create a

‘This – or – that’ and instead make it into a
    ‘This - and - that’.

So that’s why on my Blogs I usually write about topics that I lover to write about
    - and - that have a potential for profitability. For example since I love
to work on a Laptop Computer, I also (Pre) Sell them on several of my Blogs,
You can discover that I (Pre) Sell a Book about - Laptop Lifestyle –
    on several of my blogs.

    That’s what I call a - Happy - Home Business.

    • September 17, 2012 at 7:58 pm #

Hey Van, I think you got my point here. You’re passionate about laptop things and you’re blogging on that that means you’re also enjoying your work. You’ll enjoy it no matter It makes you money or not because you love what you do.

Thanks for landing on my blog.

Yes, only since I also don’t mind to make money, on several of my blog you can also find a simple list of Bestselling Products, for example while on a Book Review Blog of mine I write Book Reviews about books that might not alway’s appeal to a massive audience, so on that blog you can also find a list with the current Bestselling Books.
It’s usually somewhat easier to sell something that already sells.

I have visited your E-book review blog and I must say It’s great. The only advice I have for you is that you should register your own domain name instead of Blogspot blog.

    Hi Ehsan,
I totally agree with you – money isn’t everything and we need love our work (the same is with blogging). But you know – everything is changing, even our interests ;)
    Thanks for sharing,
    Chris

You should try to find out your passion first Chris. It can’t be changed ever. Every niche is profitable and can make you money If you have enough knowledge about it and you love that topic.

Thanks for your comment, I’m gonna check your contest out on NoPassiveIncome :)

I currently have Omega Web which is a blog about SEO, blogging, Internet marketing, etc. I also have a blog about aquarium keeping, which is another topic that I love. I can create great content for these blogs, but I don’t earn enough AdSense profits with them yet. Because of that, I decided to buy the domain MrDr.co and I will be creating a medical niche blog on it because that niche can have up to $20 CPC on AdSense ads.

    • September 17, 2012 at 11:38 am #

Correction: The domain name that I bought to use for my medical blog is MyDr.co, not MrDr.co. It’s a pretty premium domain that will be used for a site called My Doctor.

I think you’re trying a lot of topics to make money from Ian.
I would like to suggest you to stick with one topic in which you have real passion and real experiences than you’ll be able to write anything on your blog to convince your audience. This way you’ll earn more from your blog.

Just do what you love instead of trying all things.

      Thanks for stopping by.

      • September 18, 2012 at 10:35 pm #

Ehsan, my goal with the medical site is to blog on it for a few months and get the PageRank to at least 1 or 2 and then sell it on Flippa.

        • September 18, 2012 at 10:42 pm #

That’s good, but have you read the things need to be considered before trying to sell a website on Flippa? I mean it must be a good domain name, quality content, good monthly page views etc.

          • September 18, 2012 at 11:05 pm #

The first blog that I ever started was in July 2010. I accumulated over 700 posts because I posted more than one thing every day. It was a blog about general technology and gadgets, very similar to the content found on TechnoBuffalo.com. The blog made about $5 a month from AdSense and had about 9,000 monthly viewers. I sold it on Flippa in April 2012 for $800. It was hardly making any money and it didn’t have quality content or backlinks, but I was still able to make a profit… It was my first blog when I didn’t know anything about blogging, SEO or anything.

          • September 19, 2012 at 9:31 am #

It’s really great than. I would also like to try the Flippa things out lol :P

I will move with you words : ” money is not everything “. I think its applicable only in the feild of blogging : its a passion. But in reality, all those girls round you is only because of those $$$$ in you pocket.

Something which I really like is : if we don’t have any knowledge on any particular niche then we should not move with it. ( After all why to promote wrong information )

    Finally great post

    • September 17, 2012 at 1:58 pm #

I said money is not everything that doesn’t mean you should waste your time on your blog without trying to make money with it. What I mean here is that you should blog about topic in which you’re passionate about than you’ll be enjoying your work, you’ll be able to convince your reader and It will also make you more money.

I’m glad you liked my point Vivek, Do you blog about the topic which you love?

  40. September 17, 2012 at 8:48 am #

    Hey bro,
This is an interesting topic. Many beginners always ask what to blog about.

But the question remains why are you blogging?
If it’s just for passion, then blog about it
If it’s about generating income, then it’s important to do research and come out with what you thing can pay most and what you can write on.

One of the reasons I’m blogging is to generate income ;)

    • September 17, 2012 at 1:56 pm #

Enstine, You’re doing great on your blog and I must say you’ll generate income from your blog, but If you’re interested in your niche than you can stick with it for long time and you’ll also enjoy your work other than making money from it. That is what this post is all about.

Thanks for your comment bro, I appreciate it.

This post is regarding something I always think about. Whenever we are deciding to write a new blog post we should decide to write on a topic which we love to speak about. People are choosing to write on things they like as it doesn’t only give them chance to get success but they don’t get bored writing about what they like.

    • September 17, 2012 at 1:55 pm #

Agreed with you Techboy, You should write about what you love and what you know better than someone else so that you’ll be able to provide them useful information about your niche, but If you aren’t knowledgeable about your topic than you can’t stick with and you’ll not be satisfied with it even If It’s making you money.

Thanks for joining the conversation bro.

  42. September 17, 2012 at 6:56 am #

This is right point to notice when you will write on that topic which you loves more and i think this is correct thing to do because when you will consider more on that topic in which you are interested then you can earn so many things beside money.

    • September 17, 2012 at 7:42 am #

You got my point Sam. As I said that money isn’t everything, You’ll get so many more things besides money If you blog about the topic which you love.

      Thanks for adding value Sam.

Nice post! True passion really makes a huge difference in blogging. You’re right that just about any topic can be profitable. Of course some do not have many big advertisers so Adsense and other PPC methods might not be too lucrative, but if you can build a good community of readers and be creative, you can certainly find success.

    • September 17, 2012 at 7:36 am #

This is true, no matter If the selected topic doesn’t have big advertisers, you can still make money If you have good audience on your blog who believes in you.

Glade yo receive your comment Andrew.

      Hi Andrew,
I definitely agree with you. Any topic, no matter how difficult or easy it is to talk about, will become profitable as long as you have a good number of solid followers (readers and customers). Of course, when people like how you write and how you address any topic you talk about, they will most likely visit regularly and they may turn out to be potential customers once you recommend something they might like to buy.

      • September 18, 2012 at 8:24 am #

Agree with you Felicia, If people think you’re an expert in your field and you can solve their problem with your content because you’re passionate about that topic than they’ll stick with you and will become loyal reader of your blog.

That is what I’m trying to say, thanks for your comment Felicia.
